Regional Rail (RUR) & North-South Rail Link (NSRL)

You don't think anyone in Newton wants to go into Boston any time after 9AM? Again, you're ignoring the fact that several large-scale, multi-use buildings are in the works all around these stations. Something like 200 brand new apartments have opened up next to the Newtonville station just in...

Regional Rail (RUR) & North-South Rail Link (NSRL)

The Newtonville station is currently adjacent to two large, brand new apartment buildings that have dramatically increased the neighborhood's population and density. Similar development is planned for West Newton as well, and the city of Newton has plans to build TOD up and down Washington...

    2021 Boston Mayoral Race

Congratulations, we both have the same overpriced, oversaturated degree. My point (and if you went to law school then you surely already know this) was that the state can and does put limits on what can actually be consented to between landlord and tenant via a lease. So when DonkeyButlers...

Pinnacle at Central Wharf (Harbor Garage) | 70 East India Row | Waterfront | Downtown

For the sake of clarifying what actually happened, Essaibi-George most certainly did not oppose the Southie apartment building as an abutter. In fact, what makes her involvement so ethically dubious is that she didn't even disclose that her husband owned the building next door. What she did, was...

Pinnacle at Central Wharf (Harbor Garage) | 70 East India Row | Waterfront | Downtown

I despise the harbor garage and support this tower. But that said, the quality of life for the vast majority of Boston residents isn't really going to be impacted by this development much, if at all. The type of development that actually improves quality of life for the people who live here is...

    Downtown Crossing/Financial District | Discussion

It isn't possible to not discuss politics on this board because the built environment of a metro area is directly shaped by politics. This includes crime, and the often racially-biased perception of crime (I mean, that's literally why the highway system in this country exists in its current...

    Roslindale Infill and Small Developments

Regardless of the benefit to traffic flow, the sidewalks here were woefully narrow for such a busy pedestrian stretch. Massive improvement.

Massachusetts State Flag (we need a better state flag)

Honestly, I would be thrilled if they went with the design used to be on the reverse. This is a great simple design and it solves the history problem you bring up. Make the tree yellow to stick with the same color scheme and I think this is a real winner:

Massachusetts State Flag (we need a better state flag)

Ah, so apparently the yellow represents land and the blue the sea, with the two halves of the flag designed to echo the way the state approaches the Atlantic. I love it; I'd take this as the state flag tomorrow and then immediately buy a bunch of hats and shirts with the design.

Massachusetts State Flag (we need a better state flag)

Where’d this come from? I’d love to hear the designer elaborate on the symbolism. Regardless of what happens to the state flag, I really hope to see an increase in usage of the Flag Of New England. New England has arguably the strongest regional identity of anywhere in the country and we should...

Everett Waterfront Redevelopment | 52 Beacham Street | Everett

An urban development of this size can’t be successful if it doesn’t include housing. It can’t even really be called urban development. What’s this supposed to be, Universal City Walk or something?

    Nuba ( Parcel 8) | 429 Melnea Cass Blvd | Nubian Sq | Roxbury

Hell yes. Projects like this—which fill in the urban renewal gaps, stitch together neighborhoods, add non-luxury market housing, and increase intracity connectivity—are so, so much more important for the future of Boston than any downtown skyscraper.

    2021 Boston Mayoral Race

In a legal sense, property ownership is not a black and white issue (google "bundle of rights" if you want to learn how legal philosophers think of the issue). This is necessary, because it's what allows the law to declare that, despite the fact that he owns the space, your landlord can't enter...

Photo of the Day, Boston Style: Part XV (2021)

It takes place in NYC and Victorian London--and Boston's standing in for both. There might not be another city in the world that can do that.

Seaport Neighborhood - Infill and Discussion

In my anecdotal experience, Seaport Blvd from the channel to district hall is already one of the most consistently busy pedestrian stretches in the city.

401 Park Drive (née Landmark Center) | Fenway

It's a shame we're not getting a deck over the tracks here. I know it's only a small bit of track and it's hardly the major scar that the pike is, but we should still always be looking to bury as much as track as possible.

    Reconstruction of State Street Plan

This could work, but you don't want to just stop at merely preventing thru-traffic. State could be a broad, landscaped pedestrian zone filled with cafe tables, art installations and bench seating. It could be our version of the Stroget. Doing it only halfway is how you end up with a...

    Reconstruction of State Street Plan

I honestly don't even think that's even necessary. It's ok to make things just a little bit harder for cars for sometimes--especially in this case, where (1) every building on these dead-end blocks would still have frontage on another street, and (2) State could still be open for authorized...

    Reconstruction of State Street Plan

Chatham St, Chatham Row, Butler Square, Merchants Row, Commercial Street, and McKinley Square already effectively function as woonerfs. Each of these streets sees virtually no passenger thru-traffic, are used almost exclusively by delivery trucks, and, throughout the course of the day, their...

    2021 Boston Mayoral Race

Dude, you promised to never again set foot in Providence if the state doesnt agree to pay between $70-100 million just to subsidize a developer’s attempt to buy, renovate, and maintain a single skyscraper. Care to explain how that stance fits in with “smart growth”?? Though you sometimes couch...
