how can this board fault the architects of the Hotel Commonwealth when Archboston members continue flog the same "shadow" and "median strip" tropes after 358 pages of repeating themselves in this thread? Time for some new material......

    Harvard LEED Platinum classroom

You still have to mow it, though. Or do you? A truly organic lawn.

    Harvard LEED Platinum classroom

Very cool -- hopefully Harvard doesn't renege like they did with their LEED Platinum Blackstone project, where a couple years after construction they flattened the bioswale and replaced the no-mow grasses with traditional lawn grasses so they could keep it in with the (unsustainable) traditional...

    Suffolk Downs Casino?

Point taken, but maximized public transit connection will only help this project. They will still be competing with Connecticut for the car/luxobus crowd, but could monopolize the demographic of households with no car, or less than one car per driver, or people who want to drink and gamble and...

    Suffolk Downs Casino?

I imagine casinos bank much more on middle-income bourgeousie splashouts than high rollers, and also don't forget all the low-paid employees need to get to the place too

    Rules for Riding the T

It is so confusing, but my wife and I have our own mnemonic device that works: button card money button card card. It has a nice and memorable rhythm when said aloud, and thankfully when I'm struck blindside by the first of the month i am able to add a buck or two quickly so i can get to forest...

    Rules for Riding the T

i personally detest the bus riders who practically sprint to the door when it pulls up to be the first person on, then fumble through their purse/wallet to find their crumbled up charlie ticket so they can add enough nickels to it to bring it up to fare, while a dozen people stand there with the...

    Charlesgate

The devil you say-- it was a conceit of the engineers that stuck a dam at the mouth of the Charles.... In Olmsted's day the Muddy River was tidal, and that tidal influx/outflow were seized as natural infrastructure for stormwater detention, treatment and release.

    Boston in the 1960's

T Wharf was was north of and parallel to Long Wharf. Originally it was wholly separate, eventually the gap between them was filled to about the halfway point (where Marriott Long Wharf is now). As I understand it, it was removed in the 70s or 80s, I always assumed it was probably done in...

    Crossroads Initiative

Your point about Ginkgo trees is good-- I recall a very urban planting of them at one of my alma maters (almas mater?), outside of a contentious Eisenman building. They were stressed beyond belief and did not necessarily thrive on their neglect. I've noticed this with alot of street plantings...

    Hynes renovation

Isn't a consistent streetwall the worst possible thing to do if that is the case? At least now the pocket plaza helps to foil the wind a little by breaking up the streetwall, like a snowfence. Fill it in and it will be even windier in front of the mandarin.

    BU Development Thread

UMass has a +3 Masters of Architecture program. So you are looking at 7 years of schooling before you get the degree, but an architecture bachelor's degree weighs about the same as a job application to Starbucks, so its only an extra year. Plus having that non-architecture Bachelor's degree...

Boston vs San Francisco: Cheers vs Full House

Re: Trans National Place (Winthrop Square) Part 2 this is so stupid, but in Boston's defense: We are way out in front on public transportation; symphony orchestra, the pops, sports culture (sox celts marathon, not that i give a whoop), universities. and give me the pixies over the grateful...

    neat urban planning stuff

Kunstler pisses this proponent off, as well. And besides wouldn't any brilliant, charismatic speaker or writer just be another ivory tower elitist snob, with their communiss train systems and unpatriotic small building lots.
