MBTA Commuter Rail (Operations, Keolis, & Short Term)

The conductors aren't collecting tickets. This is not a structural problem, it's a human resources problem.

    MBTA Construction Projects

The South Station Tower 1 interlocking construction project is now out to bid. This is a pretty big deal. https://bc.mbta.com/business_center/bidding_solicitations/design_and_construction/construction_bid/?cbid=3414

MBTA Commuter Rail (Operations, Keolis, & Short Term)

In state government it is not unusual to get a slug of money that has to be spent by June 30, the end of the fiscal year. It is entirely possible that the T/Keolis found out about this pretty recently. Some other project likely had a schedule slip and their finance people probably said "what do...

Bulfinch Crossing | Congress Street Garage | West End

Those giant concrete tinkertoys would make an incredible artificial reef. The Hurley Building would be even better with all that corduroy concrete.

South Station Tower | South Station Air Rights | Downtown

Good update on the website today. Looks like the deep foundation is complete and the slurry rigs are moving out. Starting on micropiles. https://southstationairrights.com/news-and-meetings

    Portland Passenger Rail

Heck no. These sound like the Budd self propelled diesel cars that were never used in Vermont.

MBTA Commuter Rail (Operations, Keolis, & Short Term)

So if we have the 93 mph capable coaches with the 2022 order, does it make sense to lease an electric push/pull locomotive rather than EMUs? Given our recent investment in rolling stock, it would seem that we will be running push/pull for some time, especially outside the 128 zone.

Other People's Rail: Amtrak, commuter rail, rapid transit news & views outside New England

It is a very nice service. However, it was one of the furthest behind throughout the process. The general disfunction of the state made funds very scarce. The state has a small population compared to others with rail service. Albuquerque and Santa Fe are small metros. A capital expense like...

Wow. Even sad sack New Mexico Rail Runner? I would have bet on them to miss it.

City Hall Plaza Revamp | Government Center

I have to imagine that the current appearance of the JFK is not how it was originally envisioned. An aggressive power wash with bleach would probably bring it back.

And the article about the meeting. The west-of-Springfield contingent shot themselves in the foot with rail or bust stance. They continue to double down with some profoundly dumb comments. and now it is DOA. I'll let the article speak for itself...

Massachusetts State Flag (we need a better state flag)

I was enjoying a Wormtown Mass Whole not too long ago and thought that the logo grabbed the essence of what could be a compelling seal and flag from the existing. I like the white background with blue and gold color scheme. I like the blue shield motif. I like the star which could be the north...

Potential Exelon Mystic Station Redevelopment | Everett

That area in the vicinity of the Island End river was used for making coal gas - the stuff that used to fuel the lights of Beacon Hill. The process is predictably dirty. Periodically, a plume of some sort of coal tar will still pop up from the miles of unmapped pipes and culverts there. There...

Regional Rail (RUR) & North-South Rail Link (NSRL)

Also note that the Old Colony lines for Middleboro, Kingston, and Greenbush are not intended to have NSRL access in the latest iteration I have seen. The only tunnel trunks on south side are Worcester and Providence.

General MBTA Topics (Multi Modal, Budget, MassDOT)

I wish there was some sort of mechanism whereby a community could put their MBTA district fees into escrow until service was fully committed and then use those fees for infrastructure improvements. If the south coast rail communities had been able to sock away their money it could be released...
