City Hall Plaza Revamp | Government Center

I’m not sure what point you are making here. “DC dislikes brick” — who is DC? Plenty of brick areas in DC. Plenty of cobblestones in Nantucket.

City Hall Plaza Revamp | Government Center

The recently overhauled Franklin Park in DC seems to have struck the right balance without relying on brick: https://dcist.com/story/21/09/24/franklin-park-renovation-homelessness-camping/

City Hall Plaza Revamp | Government Center

Something about the abundance of brick in plazas inevitably looks worn and drab. Given that City Hall has large brick sections already, it seems foreboding in this setting.

A good palm tree here or there would add some humor in bleak February. It will survive too!

They need to go back to the drawing board on this one. What a disaster.

Raffles Boston (40 Trinity Place) | 426 Stuart Street | Back Bay

I don’t hate it but it looks like anything you’d see in Austin, Charlotte, Nashville these days (and leads the mind to thinking about those places, at least for me, over Boston or a city in the NE).

I think they are intentional considering that the pattern on the baseline aligns with the upper floor facades. I don’t remember seeing that in the renderings though.

The mirroring effected of the facades from the lower levels to the cantilevered floor above is a unique touch.

MIT Stephen A. Schwarzman College of Computing | Kendall Square | Cambridge

I think this one is going to turn out to be a lot more visually pleasing than the renderings let on.

Shreve, Crump & Low Redevelopment | 334-364 Boylston Street | Back Bay

Regarding your Mexican Embassy example, I think it enforces that buildings of architectural merit should be preserved. The embassy building that surrounds it will likely need updating — most brutalism buildings require it and some fall too far into disrepair to not completely redo them.

When flying into San Diego you are less than a mile from high rises. Totally different scenario.

Shreve, Crump & Low Redevelopment | 334-364 Boylston Street | Back Bay

It is completely unacceptable that Boston has allowed this façade to be demolished. I'm currently in DC where its very apparent they hold developers to a much higher standard and incorporate facades into new projects.

Winthrop Center | 115 Winthrop Square | Financial District

This entire plan seems like a lost opportunity to create an active plaza. This is one of the few places where trees are not needed for shade and certainly there is no need to fill up a small space with a fountain. Why not instead create an active plaza that has space a small retail outlet —...

Winthrop Center | 115 Winthrop Square | Financial District

Kind of a waste of energy and space for more than half the year. When they aren’t in use, they have no utility at all.

South Station Tower | South Station Air Rights | Downtown

A tall, slender 400' tower with no setback at this site would be a site to behold.
