IMO, the glassy top is a vast improvement over the bunker it's built on, and it's an improvement to the skyline/cityscape in that area. I wish Boston had a moratorium on concrete and bricks as exterior finishes, that's right I said bricks, at least for anything over 7 stories.

    The Clarendon

I think this building detracts significantly from the JHT, and that's a real shame. It's ugly, boxy and graceless. In Boston Manhattanization must be avoided but borrowing from the worst of the Bronx is OK.

    Two Financial Center

This building is handsome and it "fits". As unspectacular and uninteresting as it is, it is actually a lot better for the city than many of the towers put up in the last few years that have far better locations and more height.

Re: Fan Pier At on time Fan Pier was supposed to be the "crown jewel" of the SBW. I think Boston got slipped a Cubic Zirconium.

    Millennium Tower (Filene's) | 426 Washington Street | Downtown

Re: Filene's Better to get this one built than insist on the residential component, the hole in the ground is just too big a problem. Insist on construction financing before demo and give concessions for height for housing and other community benefits in the future. Boston must adopt a new...

    Stimulus Money

I was thinking they could use the idle Chrysler, GM and Ford plants to build windmills. It's a lot easier and cheaper than converting to electric cars using taxpayer money. Then fund new companies that aren't entirely corrupt yet to build the electric cars and trains of the future.

    Millennium Tower (Filene's) | 426 Washington Street | Downtown

Re: Filene's Although I don't like the idea of the building being shorter, if it is narrower as they claim it will be it might actually be better looking. For more people in the area, there are Emerson and Suffolk dorms, planned housing in Chinatown on the Greenway, (Kensington?) and the condo...

    I hate winter.

Re: W Hotel The length of day and night are set by latitude. For all practical purposes, every city at any given latitude has the same length of day and night on any given day of the year. Boston is at the same latitude as northern Spain and central Italy and has days of the same length as...

Re: Fan Pier Sad to see something like this in such a prominent and beautiful location, but a least it's getting finished rather than left as a hole in the ground.

    Suburban Boston

Re: The Clarendon These types of communities are common in the west and are often surrounded by far less dense tracts. They are often gated as well and are associated with an irrigated golf course. California subdivision...autocentric but tightly packed: Boston's suburbs although not...

    W Hotel | 100 Stuart St | Theater District

Re: W Hotel I like the building, especially the shape. It's not the cladding scheme I would have chosen but the multiple colors add a little interest. The shape of building gives it a demarcation so different cladding separated along that boundary seems natural although not the only choice...

Winthrop Center | 115 Winthrop Square | Financial District

Re: Trans National Place (Winthrop Square) Part 2 I will never understand why the press in Boston uses derogatory names like "Tommy's Tower" for projects most cities would bend over backwards to get built.

Boston developments, under construction and proposed

Most of the projects mentioned have been on hold since long before the credit crises and I believe some are not approved yet. The Globe can't seem to stop printing news-free, highly insubstantial articles that have little basis in actual fact, and leave the reader with no new information...

    Rose Kennedy Greenway

There are already a lot of highrises on the Greenway. If the remaining lots were built with decent 10 or 12 story buildings that enclosed and defined the space, it could be a result in a great outdoor space. The call for low rises by the mayor has nothing to do with planning or urban design it...

GrandMarc Residence Hall (YMCA) @ Northeastern U | 291 St. Botolph Street | Fenway

Re: GrandMarc at St. Botolph (Fenway YMCA Dorm) I love to prognosticate so here goes: NU will end up with the property, it really only makes sense for them. They will build something between 15 and 20 floors with a dorm, classroom and activities mix - height comparable to their own building...

    Boston in the Seventies

I lived in Santa Fe for 15 years. It's a great pace to walk and to live for that matter, but you really could not live there without a car. It really is very small and isolated (60 miles from Albuquerque which isn't much of a city, and 400 from Denver). At 121,593 sq mi, New Mexico is the...
