General MBTA Topics (Multi Modal, Budget, MassDOT)

I've used a GPS speedometer a few times when I've ridden it to/from work. It's consistently 40 mph between stations from East Somerville to Medford/Tufts. Even as of Wednesday when I last rode it.

    Unbuilt Highways in Massachusetts

When I was younger there was a substandard section in Merrimack between Nashua and Manchester but that was rebuilt probably 10+ years ago at this point along with all the other upgrades for the airport exit. I don't think there's any geometry problem on the Everett Turnpike that would preclude...

Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

I always validate and when I did so the other morning on my way into work the dispenser was absolutely full of validation receipts. Took me a minute of digging to find mine. So it seems like people are validating their fare but not taking the paper validation receipts, which is really the entire...

Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

Took the GLX to work today from Medford/Tufts. Complete game changer for my commute. Instead of my old Bus to Red to Green commute I can now just do a short walk and then a one seat ride right to my job. I'll probably still ride my bike when the weather is nicer since that's still the fastest...

Looks like DCR will be doing closures of the Southwest Corridor path during the Orange Line shutdown. Might as well make it even harder to get around at this point.

    Biking in Boston

Rode through here this morning on my commute. Obviously it'll be better when everything is completely finished up but it's already way better than it used to be. Light cycles also seem much shorter and more efficient as well.

Regional Rail (RUR) & North-South Rail Link (NSRL)

Looking at the potential construction timeline in the regional rail pdf was depressing. Even with the battery-only option being the "fastest" I'd be 56 years old by the time it was completely done. And for some reason if they were to just hang OCS and use EMUs like most of the rest of the...

    General Infrastructure

I'm not sure about how they fare when built next to a transit station. My render also isn't as good as it could have been. Looking at it again there doesn't need to be any crosswalks cutting across the displaced left turn roads, the sidewalk can just follow along the outside. Also, all of the...

    General Infrastructure

Made a very sloppy render in Illustrator of Wellington Circle overlaid with a Continuous Flow Intersection. A lot of land is opened up on the western side and crossing distances are shortened. There should also be room for bicycle infrastructure, either on road or with a series of paths outside...

    General Infrastructure

Wellington Circle is so massive it could easily be turned into a Continuous Flow Intersection with room to spare. Something creative would have to be done to incorporate Middlesex Ave but it would definitely be better than what's there now.

    MBTA Buses & Infrastructure

They put down the paint and put up signs a couple of weeks ago. I figured it was already in use but I'm not ever on the road at that time. Hopefully they actually do some enforcement because people are definitely going to try driving in it when traffic is backed up.

Some more detail on the resurfacing project here.

Just saw this today. Doesn't seem like great news for anybody who takes the commuter rail or ferry: https://patch.com/massachusetts/boston/deep-mbta-service-cut-proposed-across-all-modes-transportation

Abandoned railroads and rights of way

That makes sense, I would imagine an old drawn map wouldn't be 100% accurate. It also looks like you can see some remnants of embankments when you turn on terrain view in google maps which end up aligning with your tracing. Very cool!

Abandoned railroads and rights of way

I thought it made more sense following the power line ROW. But looking at the historical map it seems like it only crossed the Charles River once in Rockville and then cut over Village Street near the intersection with Farm Street before ending in the town center.

Abandoned railroads and rights of way

Long, long time lurker, first time poster. I did some research and using the old map posted up-thread and the location of the bridges from the photos FK4 posted I was able to trace out the (approximate) route in google maps. Zooming in on google maps in the regular map view you can also see the...
