    Proposed But Never Built

Finally, here's a doc containing summaries of many of the reports from each year: https://archives.lib.state.ma.us/bitstream/handle/2452/259668/ocm39986874-1958-SB-0585.pdf?sequence=1&isAllowed=y

    Proposed But Never Built

In one of the disregarded alternatives, which was a double deck structure along Atlantic Avenue, they note that the recently removed structure had improved property values and that adding a new one would certainly depress property values.

    Proposed But Never Built

For those interested, here's the proposed map from the 1947 report:

    Proposed But Never Built

That document is a gold mine. The opening paragraph of page 96 says it all for me: Here's a link the Metropolitan Transit Recess Commission doc: https://archive.org/details/reportofmetropol00mass_1/page/14/mode/2up. Clearly the transit and highway plans were made to complement each other to...

What was Boston like before GPS?

I learned most of the street layout in the city by walking. I'd also look at maps and generate a mental image of where important highways and landmarks were. However, the most effective way was to just get in the car and drive, which I'd do nearly every Saturday. I'd drive around, get lost...

The Hub on Causeway (née TD Garden Towers) | 80 Causeway Street | West End

I don't pay too much attention to the sign, but I do drive by it or ride into N. Station on the train almost daily and it seems to generally be advertising upcoming concerts or games at the Garden.

    Essex Landing | 1565 Broadway | Saugus

I lived about a mile from there for several years and consider that entire stretch of Rt 1 to be depressing, so this fits in perfectly. I'd love to see what the $3,400 units looks like.

South Station Tower | South Station Air Rights | Downtown

My poorly made point was that SF demolished its station and replaced it something barely better than a "bland urban renewal box". We're fortunate that didn't happen here.

South Station Tower | South Station Air Rights | Downtown

I'm in San Francisco Bay area for work this week and took my first jaunt into SF via Caltrain. The "train station" in San Francisco is a vision of what might have come to pass in Boston.

Raffles Boston (40 Trinity Place) | 426 Stuart Street | Back Bay

I have nothing to add, except that during a business trip in the early 2000's, I had the pleasure of having a Singapore Sling at said bar. I remember the bar/hotel itself far more than the drink.

Station Landing | Wellington Circle | Medford

I agree that we should be building near transit, but the part of me that used to be a regular Orange Line rider @ Wellington cringes at the thought of more people using that stop during rush hour.

The Hub on Causeway (née TD Garden Towers) | 80 Causeway Street | West End

I've only been a season ticket holder for 3 years and the changes suck. The seats were in place in my section for the C's playoffs last year and it's now impossible to not be in physical contact with the person next to you. It was merely "difficult" to accomplish this before.

The Hub on Causeway (née TD Garden Towers) | 80 Causeway Street | West End

I lived in the Back Bay for many years and 99% of my shopping happened at DeLuca's and Trader Joe's. Both are not supermarkets by any stretch of the imagination.

Seaport Neighborhood - Infill and Discussion

The picture with World Trade Center West blows my mind. I worked at Foley Hoag in 2005 and my office was on the 15th floor (top floor is 17) and either the 3rd or 4th window from the left. I parked across the street for $8/day and later started walking when I moved to Beacon Hill. I had a...

Malden + Melrose Infill and Small Developments

Melrose has been hot for a while, though I'd expect it slow down as the median price rises. I sold my (slightly median price at the time) house there in 2013. When we started the process of selling around April, we had a reach price in mind. By June, when the listing went up, we listed at...

    Unbuilt roads around metro Boston

You're welcome. Also give thanks to the person that posted the City of Cambridge doc that referenced it. I didn't get much work done yesterday after finding that doc. Also, check out page 6 of this doc for an interesting concept for the Alewife interchange...

    Unbuilt roads around metro Boston

Enjoy this: https://ia800309.us.archive.org/21/items/innerbeltexpress00mass/innerbeltexpress00mass.pdf (Innerbelt and Expressway System 1962) It lays out the preferred alignments, reasoning, statistics, etc. for the built and unbuilt highways. Most interestingly, it repeatedly makes the...

City Hall Plaza Revamp | Government Center

Re: Official City Hall Plaza Proposals I'm going to assume people with kids who may live nearby. Speaking as someone who's done exactly that, I would have used it. However, the real lack of play space in the area is for older kids, like 8+ years old. Nearly everything except the Esplanade...

South Station Tower | South Station Air Rights | Downtown

Interesting. Salesforce already has a couple hundred people in Sales and Support, I believe, at 500 Boylston (which also houses Wayfair folks, now), < 50 in Cambridge, and 1,000 or so in Burlington. I wonder who would occupy the a new Boston space for Salesforce.

    Paul Rudolph's Government Services Center

Re: Winthrop Center | 115 Winthrop Square | Financial District I lived across the street (4 Longfellow) and fully agree. Architectural merits aside, it is a major impediment to getting anywhere, and the complete lack of maintenance means much of it is surrounded by "temporary" fencing. The...
