New Red and Orange Line Cars

Wellington has disused storage tracks that can be reactivated to expand the yard capacity. When the present fleet arrived in 1979-81, most of the 1957 fleet it replaced remained in storage for a few years at Wellington before they were scrapped. The full contract includes the option of 58 cars...

Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

But that doesn't free up any money to go toward paying for GLX, replacement of the Type 7s and Type 8s is something that isn't funded yet, and only would have happened after GLX was built. These 24 cars are for the full GLX, Union Sq only interim service was supposed to be covered by repairing...

Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

The $118 million contract for 24 Type 9s to supply the additional equipment for GLX was already placed with CAF back in May 2014. If the MBTA were to cancel the order now after CAF has already begun final design and ordering components from suppliers for assembly, a large portion of that amount...

MBTA Winter 2015: Failure and Recovery

While not laying anyone off, they have not said if the regular T staff will be reduced over time by attrition. The MBTA is constantly hiring new field staff just to keep up with retirements.

MBTA Winter 2015: Failure and Recovery

I have mention before, but beyond Pacheco at the state level, any agency using FTA funds must also follow Federal labor requirements for transit: http://www.dol.gov/olms/regs/compliance/statute-sect5333b.htm The state said today that there won't be any layoffs, that drivers removed from...

MBTA Winter 2015: Failure and Recovery

They still only take unlimited ride passes printed on tickets (Zone 1A or higher, Local bus, 7-day or 1-day), same is true for the 710, 714, and 716 routes operated by Joseph's Transportation.

MBTA Winter 2015: Failure and Recovery

The private contractors might have lower costs per hour to provide the services. The routes presumably would still need an operating subsidy from the MBTA, I doubt they expect any private operator to actually recover the full cost of running the routes from fare revenue.

    "Midtown"/Widett Circle in a non-Olympics Boston

Quincy bus garage is at 954 Hancock St., several blocks north of Quincy Center Station and the (closed) parking garage. There are no CNG buses assigned to Quincy Garage. The facility is old with low ceilings, too many places for gas to pool. CNG buses have to be stored at well ventilated...

    "Midtown"/Widett Circle in a non-Olympics Boston

There is a short trolley tunnel above the Red Line station at Broadway, opened in 1917 and closed in 1919 (bad planning is not a new thing). After sitting abandoned for 90 plus years, it was converted to a training facility a few years ago. They have two old Blue Line cars, a damaged Type 8 that...

The spacing of the tracks was determined by the locations of the supports for the old Broadway bridge. (best photo I could find quickly) http://www.retrosnapshots.com/cities/old-boston-photos/boston-mass-broadway-bridge-aerial-view-photo.html#.VbfRQbNVhuA

Even with the Pacheco waiver, there are Federal laws for transit workers that restrict just how much contracting out they can do: http://www.dol.gov/olms/regs/compliance/compltransit.htm

    Urban Ring

Let's remember that the state very recently has floated the idea of a West Station-North Station DMU line along the Grand Junction, seems like a relevant thing to discuss and reference 2009 and 2011 studies (not decades old studies) discussing peer comparisons of joint use operations that are...

There are multiple share use operations in place since 1981, not just talked about, in place. The point is it can be done, it IS being done, and as technology advances, it has become easier to do. From the River Line study executive summary: "The duration of the temporal blocks is related to...
