I think it has to do with several factors: The Hatch Shell area has limited crowd use in the summer. There's plenty of room and it's used passively. Not a lot of people jumping up and down; it's a crowd that sits and listens. No snow or rain to muddy up the field. Grass recovers more...

I spent a lot of time on Cummington St. too, in the early 70's....labs, classes...in gross, old, converted buildings with no ventilation or A/C. I wonder when BU will replace the rest of them, like 111.

I agree with you as02143. You had to be there. At the time the government center complex was designed it was touted as the "New Boston". After decades of dreary, outdated cityscape, already partially destroyed by the central artery, the believe in "urban renewal" was almost absolute. Tearing...

Glad to see a lot of balconies relieving the otherwise too-slick facades, giving the building some texture and interest in contrast to the JHT.

Let's leave the North End alone, okay? It's one of the few very old and semi-intact neighborhoods in the city. Stick a few more towers in Cambridge instead.

I love the color (always a matter of personal taste), and especially the siding and the angularity of the facades. Refreshing, urban, European, and projecting into the future.

It's ironic. Beautiful window grates added to Harvard Square while beautiful and old window grates are being destroyed in Boston at the Shreve site....only to be replaced by endless, boring, Bauhaus window frames.
