Approved. Get this done. I was in this plaza the other night and it was ... well, not inviting. Driving through this section of the town, the site calls out for an anchor. Someone above said transformational. I think that's right.

The Casco | 201 Federal Street | Portland

This isn't a rendering, it's an elevation. Knowing how this process works, the developer has probably already discussed the design with staff over a year or so, and attempted to incorporate reasonable suggestions where possible in hopes that the planning board's first review of the project is...

The Casco | 201 Federal Street | Portland

I like the lighting in the Boston image, but this will be (to my knowledge) a residential building, and I would assume the residents would want control over the lighting outside their units (or just not want it at all), unlike a commercial building like this. In addition there are costs...

The Casco | 201 Federal Street | Portland

My strong assumption is that Jonathan Culley and team (I assume RSA), who are veterans of the entitlement process in Portland and therefore understand what the City staff and more importantly planning board members are looking for (in a general sense) have designed this to have a good starting...

Population was 78,000 in 1950 census. I think the reason for the modest increase now is the type of occupancy...it's primarily younger and older (pre-children and empty nesters) who are buying or renting the new units. 70 years ago it was large families.

I actually really like this design (by contrast, I think the design from Providence is barf worthy, but no offense intended ... to each their own). Not in the sense that I would say I really like 250 Seaport Blvd. in Boston or some other major city contemporary structure, but for Portland this...

Strategically the location make sense too because from an appeal perspective the scope of people who can actually oppose this (in court) would be limited to the USPO (or whoever owns the building it occupies, assuming it's not part of their REO portfolio) and the City (owner of the garage across...

Portland, ME - New Construction Continued

Long time reader, infrequent poster here. I applaud the efforts to bring some height, density and style to this part of town. When the developer is done constructing 200 Federal, I suggest they approach the City about redevelopment of the parking garage across the street -- wasted real estate...
