This guy's got it. Not only are there NIMBY's, but the area leaves a lot to be desired. Plus it's still a bit dodgy (at least, people's perception of it is). The highway connections aren't bad; get off on the Mass Ave connector and you're there in roughly 5-10 mins from the SE Expressway...

My idea has always been to add ramps to the Pike, eliminate Storrow as a highway, put the Blue Line in a (relatively) cheap box tunnel, with stations at the Hatch Shell and Mass Ave, put on top of the box handsome buildings a-la the rest of the Back Bay, and a street called "Esplanade Road"...

No kidding. The Albany area has been promised HSR for decades now. I remember as a kid when they got the Turboliners...of course, now I'm in my 20s and there's absolutely no sign of it ever happening. And it won't- it doesn't make much of a difference to downstaters, and the rest of upstate...

Word. I see 2-3 Bentley's or Aston Martin's whenever I'm the Back Bay. Rarely, if ever, do I see a Ferrari or Lamborghini, much less that awesome Veyron. Maybe it's the old money/conservative (meaning non-flashy) nature of Boston's elite. Or perhaps the winter.

Re: Trans National Place (Winthrop Square) Part 2 I don't think that anything "too tall" would throw Boston's skyline out of whack. The Hancock and Pru are substantially taller than anything else in the Back Bay - I don't think that we would argue that they're really out of place.
