[ARCHIVED] Harbor Garage Redevelopment | 70 East India Row | Waterfront | Downtown

Re: The Boston Arch (Aquarium parking garage) Anyone can appreciate good architecture just as anyone can appreciate good art. You don't have to be educated to know you like a painting, performance, musical piece, or a building. Being able to articulate why you like something, identify...

    Cape Wind Farm

No surprise there. If it wasn't them, someone else would spring up to sue. Their argument is thin - there may be artifacts from indigenous peoples that may have lived there thousands of years ago. In that case... build nothing, nowhere. Plus, the sea bed is not static, buried artifacts don't...

    Cape Wind Farm

From the Globe: It's always been a NIMBY issue - even Ted would have been for this 'clean energy' project if it wasn't in his backyard. Our economy needs more power, it should come from renewable sources, generation should be localized. Tell the NIMBYs they have to provide for their own power...

[ARCHIVED] Harbor Garage Redevelopment | 70 East India Row | Waterfront | Downtown

Re: The Boston Arch (Aquarium parking garage) Say what you will about Chiofaro and his proposal, but at least someone is standing up to Menino and the BRA. From today's Globe: I'm so sick of the same B.S. arguments - shadows on a lousy median strip of a park, and blocking access (when...

    Route 128 Developments

and hence we have crappy office parks along 128 (and 495) ... which gives rise to an archBoston 128 development thread. Ah, circle of life.

It's my Tea Party and I'll cry if I want to.

Re: Filene's Exactly. This makes them appear completely disingenuous. These people are complaining about spending, yet have said nothing about spending a trillion dollars on a war in Iraq that was started under false pretenses. They are complaining about government health care, yet many of...

    Cambridge Crossing (NorthPoint) | East Cambridge/Charlestown | Cambridge/Boston

Re: NorthPoint Cambridge (The one that was train yards, the big plan.) The first two NorthPoint buildings are nothing special, but inoffensive. The plan they were part of would have stifled urbanity. Now they have a (slim) chance of being part of something better. You don't need great...

    Fan Pier Developments | Seaport

Fallon's management team was looking for the cheapest way to build "class A" office space. One could consider it perfection in value engineering. They gave no consideration to how architecture / aesthetics could add to the long-term value of Fan Pier; just the short-sighted bottom line.

    Is parking too cheap?

I'm not a fan of Scotty either, but he is pointing out a potential problem that could stifle development even further. I don't have enough info about this cap to know for sure, but let's not dismiss the message just because we don't like the messenger.

    boston roads

^ the gates should have been taken out when Fastlane was first installed on the Tobin. They completely defeated the purpose of Fastlane - to keep traffic moving. You still had to come to a complete stop to wait for the gate to open. Just another Massport oversight.

    BU Development Thread

You are talking about two very different concepts. I agree that lack of (Portland, OR style urban growth) boundaries contributed to suburbanization; but lack of zoning for uses is what allows a city to have a mixed use texture. Zoning is a big part of what decentralized America, not the lack of it.

[ARCHIVED] Harbor Garage Redevelopment | 70 East India Row | Waterfront | Downtown

Re: The Boston Arch (Aquarium parking garage) I would love to see Chiofaro put up one of those "Menino gets the job done" banners on the garage, for irony / sarcasm. Anyone in the know would recognize it as a F-you to Menino, but what could the BRA do after allowing the same banners all over town?

[ARCHIVED] Harbor Garage Redevelopment | 70 East India Row | Waterfront | Downtown

Re: The Boston Arch (Aquarium parking garage) ^^ Well said Statler, thank you from those of us who wish to keep things civil. It is the intelligent discourse and lively debate that keeps this board interesting. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, though some may scream louder or with less...

    Rose Kennedy Greenway

So they suggested to Chiofaro a few weeks back that he could build 2x 400' towers, but changed their mind and now say 200' is the max? What did he do to piss off Menino even more? At what point does this constitute a "taking" by the city? I bet the Hooks have a case. I have to agree overall...

    Rose Kennedy Greenway

The Mayor and BRA are setting development in the city back 100 years - to a time when 50' - 200' buildings were appropriate and economically viable in this area. ...and please explain how Chiofaro's towers will block access to the harbor more than the hulking garage does now. The Greenway...

A fire hydrant would cast shadows in violation of the law they propose. It is literally that ridiculous.

    Rose Kennedy Greenway

50-200 feet? Are they serious? With those sort of rules, no one will EVER build anything on or around the Greenway - thus ensuring it is underutilized in perpetuity.

Where am I? The photo contest

Cabot Cabot & Forbes built it on spec. as high-end lab space. They tried for years to sell or lease it, but they had the resources to sit on it instead of fire-selling it. Ultimately they sold it to Harvard, and it now sits mothballed like much of Harvard's properties in Lower Allston.

    Rose Kennedy Greenway

^ The patches of grass w/ the street through the middle, bordered by Causeway and N. Washington, would be ideal for an indoor / outdoor market. Temporary solutions like this are needed to bring life to the Greenway. Expensive cultural proposals like those in the Globe article aren't practical...

    Millennium Tower (Filene's) | 426 Washington Street | Downtown

Re: Filene's Thanks Toby for clearly illustrating why all this talk of eminent domain is just a bunch of hot air. The BRA allowed this mess to occur, and now needs to take real action to clean it up - not just tough talk to appear like they're doing something. As I have said before, the BRA...
