What would you do to get the T out of its financial mess?

How has that worked in the LA basin? 2 hours for a 20 mile commute sound like fun? The landscape that results when a large metropolis is completely auto-dependent makes Crumb's last panel look bucolic. There comes a point where people are sick of congestion, they want out of their cars...

    Emerson College's Paramount Center

Re: BRA approves Emerson College's Paramount Center ^^ A great concept, yet wouldn't it be better to have a 25 story on one quadrant of the site? All you would need is one media conglomerate with a tv station and a handful of radio stations in the Boston market - call it Broadcast Center /...

    Emerson College's Paramount Center

Re: BRA approves Emerson College's Paramount Center Exactly. Developers will do whatever is easiest and most profitable. The rules of development must make a desirable product the easiest and most profitable permitted in a given location. Building over the Pike will never be profitable...

    Emerson College's Paramount Center

Re: BRA approves Emerson College's Paramount Center Exactly. It wouldn't take much to "rig" it for a good neighborhood. As you noted, width restrictions would go a long way. Taken in conjunction with the FAA height limits, a developer would have a pretty good idea of what could be built - no...

New "Anti-Shadow" Laws Proposed for Boston

Among people on these boards, those who do pay attention to the urban environment, there seems to be agreement that the current development model is broken and some consensus on how to define better development patterns. The problem is the rules in the Seaport were undefined. It was a game...

New "Anti-Shadow" Laws Proposed for Boston

Exactly - developers will take the path of least resistance. It's much easier to play by the rules than to try and change them; therefore it's easier for banks and investors to predict returns. The development business responded to the rules in the Seaport, only the big developers can play...

Boston Landing | New Balance Complex | Brighton

Re: Allston-Brighton Developments It will be interesting to see this proposal unfold. There's a ton of potential here for a great mixed-use project if they can actually get a T or commuter-rail stop. IMHO, the development area should be expanded to include almost everything on the north side...

Columbus Center: RIP | Back Bay

Re: Columbus Center He just decided to make rational points this time. Even if an excellent plan were proposed, Ned would be there making sure it doesn't ever get built.

    Allston-Brighton Infill and Small Developments

Is this the latest rendering? What happened to the "Charing Cross" proposal from Mr. Diamond? I thought it was a little taller, maybe a little better looking. I'd love to see this at 8 or 10 stories, but I'm sure the neighborhood wouldn't agree with me.

New "Anti-Shadow" Laws Proposed for Boston

Urbanism at it's finest. Provides an ideal setting for a rich city lifestyle. Dare to dream. The key here is small footprints, fragmented ownership, an urban scale that is comfortable to live in. It's a shame there isn't much more this pattern being built. If not SBW, why not remake dead...

    Rose Kennedy Greenway

But wouldn't this "sculpture" just cast shadows on the precious Greenway?

    Fan Pier Developments | Seaport

Ha ha - Those seem to sprout up anywhere they put in an exit on the interstate, even Exit 25 - South Boston. I'd also take a lousy patch of grass here without the crappy building on it, thank you.

    Fan Pier Developments | Seaport

It's a shame that the choices seem to be 1) build something awful, uninspired, and suburban; or 2) build nothing at all. At least the new Louis building is supposedly temporary (roughly 10 year horizon). Maybe in another decade, the economic and political climate will encourage better planning...

    Arborway Restoration

cityofboston.gov has a pay by web link on the Parking Clerk's page. Sadly, it is bookmarked on my computer, too. https://pci.etimspayments.com/pbw/include/boston/input.jsp

Alexandra Hotel Renovation | 1769 Washington St | Roxbury

Re: Alexandra Hotel I agree, their money is green, too. I would rather have a good restoration done by a bunch of religious nut-jobs than not have it done at all. I can enjoy the restored building from outside without ever going through the front door or engaging their religious beliefs...

Atlantic Wharf (née Russia Wharf) | Atlantic Ave | Waterfront

Re: Atlantic Wharf (formerly Russia Wharf) No, on the contrary. If Menino were interested in legacy with regards to the Seaport, he would have championed interesting development. A modern day expansion of Fort Point would certainly been notable, uniquely Boston, and added to his legacy...

    Gardner Museum Expansion | Fenway

Re: Gardner Museum to undertake $60 million expansion I like the idea of the PEM having a presence in Boston, but wouldn't the former Louis building be a better venue? The "Boston Museum" should be scrapped altogether, parcel 9 should be rental apartments.

Atlantic Wharf (née Russia Wharf) | Atlantic Ave | Waterfront

Re: Atlantic Wharf (formerly Russia Wharf) Exactly. The problem here is that the BRA thought it best to completely ignore historical context and reinvent the wheel. Had they applied the Fort Point model to the Seaport and made it the path of least resistance for developers, the Seaport would...
