Regional Rail (RUR) & North-South Rail Link (NSRL)

Re: North-South Rail Link There are many good technical arguments for the NSRL. But ultimately, it's only going to get built for political reasons, because that's what motivates people in power. That's what happened with Philly's CCCC. And as a result, they don't really take advantage of its...

The protesters are not "the community": they're a bunch of kooks. We shouldn't give one group the respectability of calling them "the community". That makes it sounds like there's a general consensus about the development. There isn't.

Remember, we have an MPO staffed by morons that believe HOV reduces capacity... because there are fewer vehicles per hour... These decisions are both boneheaded and unfortunately typical of the bad old days, which appear to march right along.

Re: Driven By Customer 'Service' Parte Dos It's probably not ready to go on the big screens so they won't announce it yet. They sent a "heads up, something's coming" email to the developers list but that's it.

Re: Driven By Customer 'Service' Parte Dos Yeah I tested it for real in Kenmore today -- Transit App showed a B coming, and voila, it showed up right on the dot. Although now with the D power problems it's showing like 7 trains backed up around Kenmore for the B... they were re-routing stuff...

I would say (a) politics and (b) what resources? Politics is what drives the process, unfortunately that's the way of the world. It's not good to be perceived as excluding large parts of the city, even if that's technically merited. It also doesn't help that there's multiple jurisdictions: the...

Right. A lot of my advocacy work has focused around getting walking, biking, transit, and light car usage (taxi/zipcar/rideshare/or ownership) to all play nicely together. Because they complement each other. Of course city geography has a big effect. I have some theories about how a...

Biking doesn't have to be "3 season" only. Just like people have learned how to prep and drive cars in the snow, you can learn to prep for biking in the snow. I only stopped biking for the worst 3 weeks of February. And only because I didn't want to get my 'fancy', new bike THAT dirty. My street...

WalkBoston has lobbied for these changes... BTD hasn't done much of anything. They wrote it into the Boston Complete Streets textbook and that's about it.

Memorial Drive has unsignalized crosswalks! Stop driving on it like it's a highway. It's not. There are people walking across there! Personally I avoid the whole damn place as much as humanly possible. So you won't find me there. But you have quite clearly cemented your reputation as complete...

Most of the salmoners that I see tend to appear like they're not from around here originally... but obviously appearance is not a reliable guide. They usually don't stop to talk about it, or even pay attention when I yell at them to stop doing it, so I can't be sure. Also, I think there were...

    Biking in Boston

The reason people ride on Memorial Drive is (a) the sidepaths are in atrocious, absolutely atrocious condition, (b) the DCR pumps all (literally ALL) of its money into ensuring that Memorial Drive is smoothly paved and (c) it's legal to ride there, in fact. So knock off your 'shaming', DZH...

^ My friend did exactly that (with the hazards on) for some poor schmuck who ended up on the Tobin. The guy said he had gotten lost trying to find a way to Chelsea... BTW, another article describing the 'helmet status' as if it mattered, on a goddamn interstate highway. Yeah... a helmet's gonna...

Yes, and such large 5-axle trucks carrying 80,000 pounds were only allowed onto roads after significant political donations were made from the industries back in the bad old days, overriding safety concerns from engineers. It's truly absurd, in my eyes, the amount of unregulated behavior that...

Your diagrams assume that the rider comes up from behind the truck. The trouble is that you can be stopped and waiting at the light when a truck pulls up next to you and does that to you. If you see it happening, that's a good time to move out in front, in full view of the cab. Or just advance...

Hmm, well the Mattapan route is usually double parked, while the Washington Street route is extremely bumpy. They both require good awareness of the door zone. I don't dispute that the ratings are probably more aspirational than anything. Melnea Cass is a good example.
