    Overpasses in and around Boston

Try GIMP, it should handle just about any image format you throw at it (including PDF). Failing that, maybe just try enlarging the PDF to fill the screen and then take a screenshot :)

    Biking in Boston

Boston published a complete streets guideline but it wasn't the standard policy to use it, just highly recommended. This is good. Glad to hear about the East Boston Greenway. That's such a wacky dead end.

    Is parking too cheap?

Where'd you end up moving after all? (p.s. update the profile!)

Finally bothered to go down to London. For £30 per year, you can buy a 'Network Railcard' (aka, discount card) to save 34% on fares in southeastern England. Ok. So the trip is £10.85 same-day return (aka 'roundtrip' in UKish) or $16.75 thereabouts in USA dollars to go 50 miles in under an hour...

    Biking in Boston

It's important to remember the BTD/DPW split. Supposedly to do with regulations (signs, marking) vs infrastructure (concrete, asphalt), but really much more political. I've met good, well-meaning people in both departments, but that doesn't mean they call the shots (although BTD Deputy Cmr...

Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

Reminds me of the VTA light rail stations too. But I think we're nibbling here. The real problem is cost escalation. Have we really reached a point as a nation where we're incapable of constructing a small building with two elevators for a reasonable price? Because that's all it is, really. A...

Regional Rail (RUR) & North-South Rail Link (NSRL)

Re: North-South Rail Link You've just made a strong argument for building the NSRL and doing the full electrification/level boarding buildout that I've suggested. The new regional rapid transit system (it's not merely 'commuter' rail anymore) with its long station-spacing, high average...

General MBTA Topics (Multi Modal, Budget, MassDOT)

Re: Driven By Customer 'Service' Parte Dos Just to put in context: There's been something approximating 2.7 to 3.0 million trips in the first nine months of this year. 30,000 cancelled trips is about 1%. Pretty good if you ask me, considering all the shit that can go wrong.

Regional Rail (RUR) & North-South Rail Link (NSRL)

Re: North-South Rail Link Anyone who currently rides CR to North Station -> Orange Line -> Back Bay CR to the south has the patience of a saint. Even worse, somehow commuting into North Station -> ??? -> and out from South Station (and return). I think I met one person who said that they did...

General MBTA Topics (Multi Modal, Budget, MassDOT)

Re: Driven By Customer 'Service' Parte Dos MAPC has regional planning areas already designated. http://www.mapc.org/sites/default/files/images/MAPC_Subregions.pdf Might be worth consideration in this hypothetical debate.

Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

Uhm, the GLX is in a deep cut that requires elevator access (+ redundancy) to achieve AAB compliance. Is there crap that could be cut? Absolutely. Switching over to Proof-of-Payment and eliminating the need for separated, controlled, monitored spaces could simplify the design a great deal. But...

Thanks, 6a. Here's something you don't see often in the Boston fens: Mooing obstacles.

Regional Rail (RUR) & North-South Rail Link (NSRL)

Re: North-South Rail Link The T should be investing money into electrification (or at least plans to when the current batch of locomotives is nearing end of life). Electrification and system-wide level boarding are precisely what any passenger railroad looking to improve itself should be aiming...

Greene King seems to prominently advertise their name on their pubs. I would agree about the US microbrews, except now I see that there is also a lively microbrew-type scene here as well. It's also pretty good. And beer is cheaper here :P A 20 oz UK pint usually can be had for 3-4 £, which is...

New Red and Orange Line Cars

Actually, I think it matters very much. That's how bunching gets started, and it's hard to sort out that kind of delay without degrading or compromising service in some way.

Street Signs and Helping People Navigate

A friend from SF was visiting NYC at the same time I was there one day. He asked me: why am I not allowed to stand anywhere? Apparently this "No Standing" business is some sort of East Coast lingo. It's not used elsewhere.

Street Signs and Helping People Navigate

I miss having street signs ... in the UK I think they're ashamed of them.

I dunno about others but the 'shithole row house' I'm staying in is rather nice, actually. Small but decent. The pubs seem to be good too, but these might be exceptional due to the location.

    The other Cambridge

Been a bit busy here; trying to find housing here is like trying to ride a bull... for the first time. Good stuff goes up and gets rented in a day. Brits seem to have lower expectations about quality too, I think. Even the new homes built on the outskirts don't come with much, and I've heard...

    Biking in Boston

The stats say that urban bike riding is much safer than suburban riding. My hypothesis is the safety in numbers effect. And if your suburb has lots of biking (and walking) then it would be safer too.
