    Biking in Boston

Ah yeah, good catch. The favorite thing of these guys is to take numbers from the whole country. As if Boston had any similarity to Alabama in terms of commuting mode choice...

    Biking in Boston

I like the top picture. Bicycle riders vastly outnumbering cars on the Longfellow inbound commute. The op-ed really shows how the whole issue is about speed. His desire to speed on city streets is more important to him than anything else, or anyone else's life. All of the destinations of the...

Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

No, it is not a stretch. It is the law. https://www.massdot.state.ma.us/planning/Main/PlanningProcess/StateImplementationPlan.aspx The failure to meet the goals by Dec 2014 has resulted in intermediate steps, required by law, to reduce air pollution.

Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

Really? Anyway, the point is that the GLX build requirement derives from the Federal Clean Air Act and is not some kind of special favor being done for the CLF.

Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

The GLX is part of the State Implementation Plan, which is a document to ensure compliance of the CA/T project with the Federal Clean Air Act. There is no 'special interest' involved here. The CLF is merely the messenger (a set of lawyers who do work on behalf of environmental protection). The...

Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

Can we put that comparison to bed? You could technically buy some kind of vehicle. And let's assume away all of the difficulties associated with buying a used car. Now who pays for the gas, the insurance, the registration, the driver training (for those without licenses), the parking, the...

Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

FWIW I think I fully agree with whoever it was that said that this is just a problem of gouging. Politicians have committed to this project at all different levels. They can't say no. And the consulting firms know that they can't say no. So they've goosed the prices up and up. The companies...

    MBTA Buses & Infrastructure

tangent, your name is apropos. Anyway, blowing up half of Boston in order to double the size of the Green Line tunnel in width, ... that is a truly insane proposal. Want to talk about cost? Probably more expensive than the Big Dig to convert the Green Line to 4-lane BRT. And for what?

"Why doesn't Boston have taller buildings?" on SSP

There's tons of industrial lots / vacant buildings in Allston that could be redeveloped (and probably will be, similar to 'Green District') and aren't part of Beacon Park or anything. There's whole stretches of empty land near the Southwest Corridor in Roxbury that are within a quick walk of...

Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

While there are technically ways to avoid it, both Fenway and Longwood (on "D") also rely heavily on at-grade track crossings to get passengers to and fro. Nobody is going to walk up the hill, around a long detour, merely to avoid a track crossing that takes them directly to the platform, if...

    MBTA Buses & Infrastructure

Some people (in another thread) have mistakenly believed that BRT could replace the Green Line. Apparently they missed this article by Ari that lays out the geometry constraints quite well: http://amateurplanner.blogspot.com/2015/06/what-is-actual-capacity-of-brt.html In short: a 4-lane BRT...

    Biking in Boston

Yeah, Storrow doesn't begin until the BU Bridge technically. None of the other roads mentioned (Rt 9, Rt 28, SFR, Mem Drive, Jamaicaway) are fully grade-separated. They also mostly have sidewalks (in varying degrees of disrepair). At-grade intersections and sidewalks are generally not...

    Biking in Boston

I once asked a higher-up at DCR about that (out of curiosity, not an intention to ride there) and he claimed that Storrow counts as a limited-access road (therefore no bikes, no walking, no horses). Of course, DCR being incompetent as they are, that could be wrong info. But it doesn't really...

Regional Rail (RUR) & North-South Rail Link (NSRL)

Re: North-South Rail Link Yes, the very same Paddington station under which TfL is currently adding an underground annex as part of the £15 billion Crossrail effort, which itself is a tunnel connecting many of the existing terminals and cutting under the entire city. Much like the North South...

    Boston Civic Design Commission

I went once. You can talk to them. I got in a minor argument with Manfredi over some details on the particular project I was curious about. They decided to make some pretty sweeping changes to the design and the developer just went along with it. I didn't care for the changes but oh well...
