Multi-Family Zoning Requirements for MBTA Communities

Has anyone plotted compliance versus income and race yet? I suspect the results would be stark.

General MBTA Topics (Multi Modal, Budget, MassDOT)

Do your calculations rely on per-axle load (i.e, accounting for different numbers of axles on vehicles)?

General MBTA Topics (Multi Modal, Budget, MassDOT)

It's not - road wear increases as the fourth power (square of the square) of axle load - so a vehicle that's just 19% heavier will cause twice the road wear, despite having a much smaller gap in fuel efficiency.

    The Official MBTA System Map

You're probably thinking of the inclines at Northeastern and Blandford Street, which were originally hollow trestles to accommodate potential future subway extension. They were indeed filled in during the 1980s track work to accommodate the LRVs. As far as I know, the underpasses at Symphony...

    The Official MBTA System Map

I don't think the National Register status is actually that big of a deal for preventing renovations. NYC has dozens of stations on the National Register, many of which they have retrofitted for accessibility. I suspect the MBTA has been avoiding it partially because of the status, and partially...

Other People's Rail: Amtrak, commuter rail, rapid transit news & views outside New England

Must be something to do with Norfolk Public Schools, whose ballfields back up against the Franklin Line, since that's the only rail line that gets above 10 mph in his district. It's been introduced at least 4 times before from the same district.

    Underground station layouts

Good catch! I'll see what I can track down; it unfortunately doesn't show on the fire alarm diagram in the station. If anyone knows of plans for the Parcel 7 (Public Market) building that show them, please let me know.

    Underground station layouts

It's still very much a work in progress (and occasionally I do make corrections), so unfortunately I don't share the full file publicly. I do plan to do so when I reach a reasonable state of completion - at least all of the underground stations - and also release it as KML and shapefiles.

MBTA "Transformation" (Green Line, Red Line, & Orange Line Transformation Projects)

It's a tricky situation - they're less than 800 feet apart, and it's not possible to have an accessible platform on the south side of Warren due to the 7% grade. North of Warren is a tight curve (229' radius IB / 280' OB) that has additional complications. It's the tightest platform curve on the...

Multi-Family Zoning Requirements for MBTA Communities

That's certainly a reaction a lot of us have had. Unfortunately, those riding transit and those opposing zoning changes probably don't overlap much, so it's hard to say whether it would have any actual effect, while it would hurt transit ridership. It would also be nearly impossible to enforce...

    The Official MBTA System Map

For a very brief time (less than a year, I believe) after the 2006-2007 renovation, the signs were green: (Source: https://www.nycsubway.org/perl/show?79139 ) Clearly that's not the right choice, but I do agree that some kind of visual differentiation might be good. Maybe two thinner red...

MBTA Commuter Rail (Operations, Keolis, & Short Term)

Newburyport was a different animal - 9 miles of single track, two basic stations, and a badly-needed 4-track layover yard. The line was recently abandoned, so no freight to work around but no legal issues with property lines etc.

    The Official MBTA System Map

Very interesting! I firmly disagree with his first point. Not only does it introduce gross geographic inaccuracies across the entire map, but it's not even correct on a network level! The 66 follows Huntington for several stops, which the map flat out ignores. It's also so frustrating to have a...

    Crazy Transit Pitches

There's a mile of insufficient density between BC and Newton Center, and the latter is already well served by the D. Streetcar service on that part of Comm Ave ended in 1930, and bus service in 1976. A one-stop extension of the B to the west side of BC would be plausible, though the dorms are...

MassDOT Rail: Springfield Hub (East-West, NNERI, Berkshires, CT-Valley-VT-Quebec)

The Pike doesn't go anywhere near Spencer. The only place the B&A crosses the Pike is just east of Palmer, and the only other place it's even near the Pike is some particularly empty areas of Rochdale and Charlton. On an intercity-oriented schedule, the only intermediates would be Palmer and...

    Crazy Transit Pitches

People mover yards aren't that big. The one for SFO, substantially bigger than Logan would need, is about a 1-acre building with half an acre of outside trackage. The more I fly through Logan, the more convinced I am that it needs a people mover. The airport is simply so frustrating to access...

MBTA "Transformation" (Green Line, Red Line, & Orange Line Transformation Projects)

    Warren and Allston are to be consolidated per current plans. Current plans would result in: BC - 3200 - CHA - 1300 - CR - 1300 - SR - 1400 - WS - 2300 - A/W - 1200 - GS - 1100 - HA - 1800 - PC - 1500 - BS - 1400 - AS - 2000 - BUC - 700 - BUE - 2500 - KM I don't love the long gap between BC and...

MBTA "Transformation" (Green Line, Red Line, & Orange Line Transformation Projects)

Also interesting to note: two of the designs have changed significantly since February. Fairbanks/Brandon Hall was to have staggered platforms, with ramps to the westbound level at both the existing stairs. The consolidated station has the platforms together, with a single ramp between the...

MBTA "Transformation" (Green Line, Red Line, & Orange Line Transformation Projects)

Interesting, not surprising. "Summit Hill" isn't viable because of Summit Avenue. Brandon Hall was a hotel built in 1903. As millerm277 pointed out, it burned in 1946. The 1501 Beacon tower is now on the site. This mapping of resident names for neighborhoods is interesting. "Corey Hill"...
