    The Official MBTA System Map

It’s landmarked, which restricts the changes they can make to the station.

General MBTA Topics (Multi Modal, Budget, MassDOT)

After they complete the rollout of AFC 2.0, I thought fare gates on the GLX would be unnecessary. Have they changed that plan?

MGH Ragon Building | 55 Fruit Street | West End

The angles and window sizes on the tower remind me of the Nashua St Jail.

Why can’t they check that my Charlie Card was properly validated, instead of asking for the paper receipt?

New Red and Orange Line Cars

So they need to test on the main line, not just the test track?

    Heat Pumps vs Gas Pipelines

We switched to heat pumps when our boiler died this summer. They have done a good job keeping up during this cold stretch. We are still figuring out how to balance the various heads to evenly heat the open floor plan we have. It takes a little time to get used to the breezier nature of the pumps...

New Red and Orange Line Cars

What is involved in the testing of new cars before service entry? The T roster on transithistory.org was recently updated, but they still haven’t accepted any cars delivered since August. I would expect midway through serial production, they should be able to accept cars quicker.

General MBTA Topics (Multi Modal, Budget, MassDOT)

It may help to look at how the political landscape changed since the task force was set up. The easiest exit strategy for the Governor was eliminated on 11/5. Now she has to pivot to Plan B.

Table Talk Lofts | Washington Street | Worcester

The lack of cornices and detailing is depressing.

Winthrop Center | 115 Winthrop Square | Financial District

It is mostly a desire to avoid having the “wrong” people loitering. Beautiful people with money to spend are welcome. Homeless people are not.

AC Hotel by Marriott | 1 McGrath Highway | Somerville/Cambridge

The old commercial building with the muffler shop and the tropical fish shop has been demolished. Not sure if this one is really progressing or just prepping the site for a flip.

Multi-Family Zoning Requirements for MBTA Communities

The law was written in a manner that allowed municipalities to get away with paper compliance, by legalizing existing housing, rather than demanding true compliance. Political reality wouldn’t allow otherwise.

    52 New Street | Alewife | Cambridge

I’m so used to seeing Zip System, that the sight of vanilla plywood on such a large project is jarring.

Holocaust Museum Boston | 125 Tremont Street | Downtown

The BPDA project review document has a project description on page 10 that gives background on the design and the choice of location. Both are deliberate choices meant to engage people in learning about prejudice and hatred. Fitting in would be counter to that mission.

Potential Exelon Mystic Station Redevelopment | Everett

Slightly cynical take: assuming they route around Stellwagen to the south, away from Marblehead, it sites the energy infrastructure in poorer communities. Part of the ACK RAT et al complaints about Vineyard Wind revolve around the optimal location for infrastructure finally being near the rich...

General MBTA Topics (Multi Modal, Budget, MassDOT)

The lesson of the past year: Fewer, longer, closures are best. Those OL closures sound like they’re hemmed in by the coordination with the external construction. The RL closure makes me ask “could they extend it to a full week and make more substantial progress?” I don’t want to return to the...

Fusion reactor at Devens. 3-D Printing at Devens

Side point: I hate the ultra bright aesthetic of modern housing, whether it’s new-build or renovation.

Police Details, Cameras, & Enforcement Methods

If you take the human cops out of the equation, you also take the reciprocity of letting a fellow first responder or first responder’s family member slide. Enforcement becomes rote, at least until all the scofflaws install Q branch rotating license plates.
