Rock Row (née The Ridge, née Dirigo Plaza) | Westbrook, ME

They've announced another new restaurant: Asador Grill, by the folks behind a place in Kennebunk I've never heard of, The Lost Fire. I have no idea where it's going to go unless it's going to be part of the unbuilt stuff.

There was supposed to eventually be a light and fountain show in the quarry. However, I've also been told that every time they go down into the quarry, Westbrook Fire Dept. throws a fit.

Given that they're usually buildings of low public interest (other than the arena at Orono), it's far less confusing than the Cross Insurance Center/Arena business.

Portland actually had TWO cemeteries that weren't located in Portland: Evergreen, which was in Westbrook or Deering when it was purchased (not sure which), and Forest City, in what is now South Portland. Both are still in use for burials, but I've never known anyone who went to Forest City.

    Portland Passenger Rail

It's a pipe dream. The Union Branch is in the abandonment process if it isn't already completed. Personally, I'd be more interested in the line serving revived industrial uses on Presumpscot Street, but no one has been beating the drum for that.

    Historic Portland Discussion

If anyone else has tried to remember where Ballard Oil, with their German shepherd over the front door (and on the cab of their trucks) was located, now we know: where the Marginal Way Walgreen's is.

I'll just say, in my experience, finding any photos that show the former grandstand at the ball field is a rare feat. Great job @Portlander!

    Portland - General Infrastructure

I remember the bus running to Crescent Beach when I was a kid, although I never took it there. This also makes Scarborough a possible member as well. I'd actually hope Biddeford-Old Orchard Beach-Saco stays separate, just for the acronym they could never officially use but everyone else should.

In the 80s, it was the after-5 watering hole for a lot of the blue collar industrial workers on the waterfront (Blake's, etc.) I wonder how many people in that's demographic are still around.

Pull this one out of Crazy Transit Pitches and move it to reality: After 40+ years, South Portland is merging its bus service into Metro. https://www.mainepublic.org/business-and-economy/2024-10-09/south-portland-agrees-to-consolidate-bus-service-with-metro

Potential Soccer Stadium | Portland peninsula

I went searching and could not find the USL League One rules online. I did find the FIFA Laws, and they specify that for artificial turf, it's okay to have other markings on the field so long as the soccer lines are a distinctive color. I wonder if the turf itself was not sufficient for pro...

Portland, ME - The Existing Environment

As I recall from when it adorned the front of the PMA for years, the white on the bricks is actually a natural process related to the bricks or the mortar curing in the sunlight. I'm sure someone here can explain it more precisely.

So, there's an amendment to the agreement on Monday's Council agenda, because apparently USL League One rules don't allow the existing gridiron markings to remain on the field, so the Hearts of Pine will be replacing the turf and reimbursing the city for the labor to change the markings? The...

Rock Row (née The Ridge, née Dirigo Plaza) | Westbrook, ME

The Press Herald today has a cover story on the reopening of the Clarks Pond cinema as "Entertainment Luxury Cinemas", and it also mentions Rock Row... So they're finally giving us a date of sorts for the cool part?

    465 Congress Street | Portland

I'll be honest: it hurts my heart that that ground-floor space will be turned into a bar. It's the finest remaining space in the city that just makes you know you're in a BANK. As a kid, I remember it being the headquarters of Sun Savings & Loan, which (I just looked it up) was folded into...

Honestly, I never had an issue with the white Holiday Inn. It broke up the depressing earth tones. Great pic, TC_Zoid!

METRO gets 5000 riders/day? In a direct service area of just over 130,000? (I counted Portland, Westbrook, Falmouth, and half each of Gorham, Yarmouth, Freeport and Brunswick since they get limited service). I'm not sure that's bragging numbers. I would think that one of the leading benefits...

The Casco | 201 Federal Street | Portland

That is the notorious 24-hour (they all were back then) Dunk's that was a known place to hire ladies of the evening. The area west of Congress Square had become something of a red light district, with the State Theatre showing X-rated films (as was the old Paris Cinema on Oak St.), Joe's Smoke...

The Casco | 201 Federal Street | Portland

Actually, as you might now be able to see, I quite like that red signage. Having grown up with any number of things painted at the top of the elevator tower below where the cell tower is now, ranging from the "EMH" Batwing logo of the Sixties to "Sonesta" to "Radisson," this signage actually...
