Do you know what's actually outdated about the tower? I know it's vintage; I remember when it opened in the early 70's (when the tower walls were blue).

Portland Museum of Art Expansion | Portland

I may be wrong, but i don't recall Landmarks ever taking an active role in fundraising to preserve a building, with the possible exception of the Portland Observatory which they manage. Fighting proposed demolitions, yes, as well as cataloging existing structures and supplying their little...

No, nothing to do with the design. Landmarks has simply lost their challenge to the demolition of 142 Free St., and are debating whether to appeal to the state Supreme Court.

Denied on both standing and merits (the merits being, essentially, that the Council had every right to make the decision that they did). The article embeds the full text of the ruling.

Is it time for a new Portland arena?

How often will Portland fill that, though? The Maine Celtics are happy where they are, the Mariners aren't selling out the current arena, Albany has arena football and pro lacrosse filing its dates... As a Portland taxpayer I'm not enamored of the idea of spending a billion dollars to build...

It may be telling that the only revolving doors I know of in Greater Portland are the ones at the Jetport, and the one(s?) between One and Two Monument Square.

Is it time for a new Portland arena?

Providence is very strong, Brown plays in the ECAC Hockey League (might be the biggest D1 sport where the Ivies are actually a factor), URI appears to have a club team that plays in some alternate, non-NCAA organization (the ACHA), and Bryant, so far as I can tell, doesn't currently have a team...

Is it time for a new Portland arena?

I have never heard of Springfield having a good reputation. My uncle used to tell the story of going to Boston for the all-New England basketball tournament (just "the tournament" in the parlance of the day). They went into a hotel to get a room; the guy at the counter asked where they were...

Is it time for a new Portland arena?

I know! My niece goes there! And, to be pedantic, they were a 15 seed. But for the mini-Beanpot I was referring to hockey.

Is it time for a new Portland arena?

If Bryant could get a varsity team going then Providence could have it's own Beanpot with them, Brown, Providence College and URI (which plays in a non-NCAA conference). Maybe call it the Coffee Milk Jug!

Is it time for a new Portland arena?

The fact that Fargo shows up in 3 of the 4 listings - even alongside Sioux Falls in one instance - makes me believe they're bringing something special to the table. Or, maybe it's just super economical to have it there. (Personally, I am more perturbed that Union is the host college in Albany...

    Kennebec Block

Thanks for the info! I knew that E. Perry had refused to move for years (I live in Riverton and know well where New England Recycling / Schnitzer / now Radius Recycling has moved to (unless you look that way driving southbound on Riverside near the shelter and Lucas Tree, you'd never know it was...

Is it time for a new Portland arena?

I would imagine that Penn State athletics play a much larger part in Pennsylvania's cultural psyche than Orono's do in ours. Also, and probably far more telling, I just checked and Allentown is 1:15 from Philadelphia. (And that was driving time to the actual arena from Independence Hall.)

I can't speak to how much Netflix content will be AI-generated, as I am the last person in America who doesn't subscribe to it (it may be free trial time when Sandman season 2 drops). However, a humanities-focused center on the philosophy, meaning and consequences of AI strikes me as being right...

Kennebec Block hit the paper this morning... https://www.pressherald.com/2025/03/25/another-former-scrap-yard-in-portland-is-targeted-for-housing/ I'm wondering, though... why did the scrapyard finally close?

Is it time for a new Portland arena?

Originally, the Thompson's Point development did include a dedicated arena for the Red Claws; it wouldn't have been much larger than the Expo but it would have been a modern building. Unfortunately, that went by the wayside when the project was sold years ago

Is it time for a new Portland arena?

I strongly doubt that anyone involved in funding UMaine, whether the Legislature or the boosters, would be interested in ponying up to host an event in Portland. The anti-Portland sentiment in the rest of the state remains strong. And then the question becomes, what does Portland offer that...
