General MBTA Topics (Multi Modal, Budget, MassDOT)

The obvious solution for historical signs like this is a plaque that says something like "This is a historical sign"

Someone caught the Wendell derailment on video. It's like watching a train wreck.

Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

Looking at the damage to the Type 7 vs. the Type 8, I know which one I'd rather be on in a crash.

    MBTA Construction Projects

I really like this headhouse design, it's similar to Aquarium's. I like headhouses where it's obvious that you're going underground.

    General Infrastructure

Oh, that's interesting, they're planning to replace the existing Appalachian Trail bridge over the Pike with a combined trail and wildlife crossing. That'll require some clever design. From the grant statement: I kind of doubt that they're going to design in separate trails for thru-hikers and...

    General Infrastructure

The existing rotary isn't under the highway, it's 100ish' to the east. I have to loop all the way around it regularly, coming back from Franklin Park Zoo, and being able to just turn left onto I-93 would be awesome.

One of the options presented in the, er, presentation is a diverging diamond under I-93. I'm a bigger fan of SPUIs for no particular reason; one of the problems with them is that the large paved area can make snow removal problematic, but presumably that's less of an issue under an overpass.

Other People's Rail: Amtrak, commuter rail, rapid transit news & views outside New England

I find it astonishing that quad gates aren't required on Class 6 track. It's easy to misjudge how much time one has to go around the gates (not that one should ever, ever do that), because looking up the tracks you really can't tell how fast the train is going.

Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

That makes sense. You want the crossing to be at the departure end of the platform, where the train is already stopped.

MassDOT Rail: Springfield Hub (East-West, NNERI, Berkshires, CT-Valley-VT-Quebec)

Not if they have to stop there for some reason.

MassDOT Rail: Springfield Hub (East-West, NNERI, Berkshires, CT-Valley-VT-Quebec)

I'd think it should be fairly easy to build an EMU with a (relatively) small battery in it to bridge electrification gaps at too-low bridges. Probably need some automatic mechanism to drop the pans at the right time.

    The Official MBTA System Map

My older kid did one of these spontaneously when they were 7 or so, it included all the subway and bus routes we typically use, the Museum of Science, Children's Museum, Aquarium etc. It was nearly 100% topologically accurate.

Wow, those really are recycled chunks of overpass deck. That's hilarious.

Regional Rail (RUR) & North-South Rail Link (NSRL)

And the NSRL is already future-proofed to some extent; not obstructing the hoped-for northern portals of the tunnel was one of the criteria for locating the GLX maintenance facility.

    Biking in Boston

Interesting concept, but none of them are reasonable walking distance while carrying a guitar from me. And the nearest Red Line station is a 15-minute walk from both my teacher and I, which would make it at least a 45-minute commute in each direction. It is a 15-minute bike ride, however (and...

    Biking in Boston

Welp, that's going to suck for me. My guitar teacher is on Broadway, and while I usually don't have a problem finding a parking place (I use his guest permit), there's not a whole lot of margin. And riding a bike carrying an acoustic guitar is kind of difficult.

    Green Line Type 10 Procurement

I noticed that too. It's one of the sections with wheels, so the seats are pushed to the inside in order to make room for them. Someone who apparently works in disability access was complaining that those sections were too narrow for a wheelchair or even a stroller, and that disability access...
