General MBTA Topics (Multi Modal, Budget, MassDOT)

Xfinity Center is a fine venue in itself, but a nightmare to get to and a worse one to get out of. When I used to go to concerts there (back when it was still Great Woods), I found that the only way to avoid sitting in the traffic jam of everyone exiting for a full hour was to get over towards...

Other People's Rail: Amtrak, commuter rail, rapid transit news & views outside New England

Although, that single track down the middle of the highway does occasionally provide for awesome sights like this one.

Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

I walk past that section nearly every morning and there is always work being done on it.

Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

There's a regular countdown sign outside the College Ave entrance to Davis that used to give arrival times for the trains, but they repurposed it for the buses.

There's a BlueBikes stand across Broadway at the foot of the bridge.

Infrastructure to Nowhere (The Vestigial Infrastructure Thread)

If there were stations, they were probably from the Springfield, Athol and Northeastern, which was mostly inundated by the reservoir.

Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

Thanks for the photos. My high school student is really looking forward to that stairway opening so they don't have to walk all the way around the school to get in. They did find the bottom-level exit door that's right by the station, but you can't go in that way.

    Better MBTA Station Names

But only for the Orange Line. Rename the Red Line part back to Washington and our evil plan will be complete.

Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

They were running what felt like full speed between Ball Square and Gilman Square this morning. Got to experience it twice because we got to the station before I noticed my younger son had forgotten his backpack. So he didn't validate because guess where his card was.

MBTA Commuter Rail (Operations, Keolis, & Short Term)

According to the story, Ashkenazy has promised that the down escalator will be fixed within 48 hours, and the up escalator within 2 weeks. If I might make the tiniest little suggestion... once the down escalator is fixed, how about running it going UP?

Biking the Boston 'Burbs (Trails, MDC, & Towns beyond Hubway area)

The BFRT is really pretty. (Unlike the MCRT through Weston and Wayland, which is marred by the power line.) I have an insane plan of one day taking the Downeaster to Exeter and riding the Rockingham and Salem rail trails 45 miles to Lawrence, then taking the commuter rail back. And the Franconia...

    Crazy Transit Pitches

The Tremont Street tunnel is much too small for the clearances required by buses, IIRC.

Northern Avenue Bridge Fort Point Channel

Unpopular opinion: the Northern Avenue Bridge was ugly the day it was built. No idea why so much importance is attached to preserving it.

    Better MBTA Station Names

I'd definitely vote for renaming Aquarium to Long Wharf. Long Wharf has been there for almost 400 years, it should have a station named after it.

    Commuter Rail to New Hampshire?

Speaking as someone who drives up to the White Mountains regularly, for both hiking and skiing, this sounds lovely but I can't imagine it actually working. First, there's no way you can make the old White Mountain Division even remotely time-competitive with I-93, and that matters for people...

    Crazy Transit Pitches

Sure, and I came to the same conclusion here. But the proposal I'm referring to is to repurpose the entire length of the Yard 10 lead, from East Somerville to Sullivan, as LRT.

    Crazy Transit Pitches

Interesting set of proposals. There's one big problem with repurposing the Yard 10 lead for GJ light rail: right now that's the freight connection from the Lowell Line to the other northside lines. So your GJ branch would have to be elevated above it, then ramp down after the (former) wye to get...

Biking the Boston 'Burbs (Trails, MDC, & Towns beyond Hubway area)

Is there a plan for what the intersection of the two trails is going to look like? I really hope it's a rotary with the old diamond in its original location in the middle.
