    General Infrastructure

I think part of the problem is that such planning is either beyond many people or virtually impossible at rush hour. I do agree that if one keeps their head up and reads the signage, it's possible to identify the correct lane, which is way better than many places where there are not markings or...

The ONLY reason I've ever had to deal with Wellington Circle on a daily basis was to get to/from the Orange line. lt's an active impediment to people who want to take transit. Another big issues are that you have to have a pre-knowledge of the intersection to choose lanes appropriately to...

    General Infrastructure

I'm not sure what the right answer is, but Wellington Circle is the main reason I gave up on trying to commute via the Orange Line from Winchester. In optimal conditions, it's about 15 minutes from my house. During commute ours (pre-COVID, at least) it ranged from 30-45 minutes, with most of...

Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

As someone who's lived in that area both before and after the overpasses were removed, the new configuration is a massive improvement, but the actual implementation still needs some work. Each side of the brick curbing has independent walk signals and stop lights, i.e. the stop light shows a...

Regional Rail (RUR) & North-South Rail Link (NSRL)

Hello fellow Zone 2 reverse-commuter! While I'm no longer a member of this illustrious group, I did the downtown to Waltham commute for a few years and was a regular rider of the 5XX buses, and even the elusive 170 bus. As noted, the schedules of these buses was much more "on time" in the...

Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

How wide is the Paul Dudley White path along the Charles as you approach Cambridge Street / River Street? That's pretty narrow and bounded by barriers on either side, and feels like a tight squeeze when passing or when someone is coming from the other direction.

Charlesbank Landing - Esplanade (near MOS)

As a former local resident and parent, I still think rebuilding the pool would be more useful, but (and I can't read the article, so I don't know what actual plans are) I'm sure the Esplanade Association will include enough space for hosting fundraisers, etc. Even if the building just included...

The Alcott (née Garden Garage Towers) | 35 Lomasney Way | West End

Access isn't restricted at all, so I'm not sure what adding streets would do other than add cars to one of the few places in the area where one can walk and feel like you're part of an urban oasis (despite the entire area feeling a touch run-down).

    Laconia, NH

Funny that you should say that. The Colonial is where I saw The Empire Strikes Back as a child, when the theater was in its incarnation as a single-screen moving theater. It was later chopped up into a 5 screen theater. RANT A few folks I know that have attended a show at the theater raved...

West Cambridge / Alewife Area Infill & Small Developments

True, but for me that's mostly about the 2-4 Billion spiders that DO hang out there.

    The New Office/Lab Thread

The photo of the "new" Facebook building includes the corner of the current building in the far right, so it looks like they're not very far apart.

    Cambridge Crossing (NorthPoint) | East Cambridge/Charlestown | Cambridge/Boston

I've lived in the building next to CVS on Charles Circle with a living room that overlooked the action, and there's very little that I've experienced that can compare to that for noise pollution. The Red Line, constant flow of ambulances, screaming drunks, honking horns, and everything else that...

    Conley Terminal cranes arriving

From https://www.mass.gov/doc/2017-massachusetts-freight-plan/download, MassDOT's reply to the Eastern Mass Freight Rail Coalition's statements that track 61 should be extended to Conley:

Regional New England Rail (Amtrak & State DOT & NEC)

If Manchester can complete extensions to the various paths along the former M&L and former line to Portsmouth, that'd let the Valley option connect to a regional bike network that already connects that area to points south and west (across the river).

South Station Tower | South Station Air Rights | Downtown

A couple weeks ago, I took a train out of South Station for the first time since the construction got going. The interior of the station seems so much darker now. It definitely started to give me a Penn Station vibe.

Fenway Corners (Red Sox) | 1 Jersey Street | Fenway

It really is such a great spot. I lived in Back Bay near Comm & Fairfield, and this was a go-to spot for me and my son when we were hungry. It was a nice walk, and not too far from the Clemente fields for some running around.

    Fastest Proposal-to-build in MBTA History?

From what I've found (and posted elsewhere on this site, IIRC) these transit plans were positioned as elements of the overall transit plan, and as complements to the planned highways, with the implication that Highways + Transit were necessary elements to move people efficiently around the...

Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

I think it makes sense to connect as many as possible to a GL station, especially since several already travel on or near the corridor. That said, I think that's too big a detour or gets away from the core markets of several of the routes, especially the 134 which seems to have decent Medford...

Other People's Rail: Amtrak, commuter rail, rapid transit news & views outside New England

I felt like this during my one and only trip on the Texas Eagle. There are places where just getting to the airport is a multi-hour journey and the cost of flying is extreme, so it really becomes a bus vs. train conversation. For any length of time, train will definitely win on comfort.
