^I could be wrong, but maybe it's not a bell, but a speaker for an electronic carillon. It doesn't have the structure or support to be much of bell that would be rung with a rope or electric hammer.

I didn't realize this building was still used for the mentally ill. There's got to be a more pleasant location for this service for their sake.

Re: 73-79 Essex Street I agree....looks like they may take the whole block. Down the end was a terrible fire in a smaller building that opened up that little triangle of property.

I like the plaza as it is, with the fountain, full of trees and very eye-appealing plants and seasonal flowers. I too dislike the white box...it's just another excuse for another expensive lunch mall.

Our own Federal Court House on Fan Pier was designed well. And I agree that there's a big difference between it and any building housing the FBI or other such agency. Contextual location would have a lot to do with the design as well (no offense to Chelsea). I see no reason to draw attention...

This is in the realm of my rarely-used description for buildings: "delicious"!

The need to be "different" is juvenile. And besides, who knows how outlandish the final product actually will be....may be even worse....I no longer trust renderings.

Seeing as it's being built with our tax dollars, I don't care about ugly for these stand-alone FBI buildings....typical federal style boring.....but hopefully cheaper than the proposed US embassies planned around the world for Billions $$$$..

You guys are funny! I remember when the Hilton was assembled (not really built...all prefab concrete sections) and knew then as it rose that it was going to hideous. Then they added the mirrored tower....helped a bit. But let's face it, that entire corner of Boston needs a huge...

All I want is for them to put the urns back on top. I never liked the barren plaza and at street level I don't think anyone will really notice the infill facade, as long as something busy and retail goes into the ground floor....and not just another naked marble lobby.

This is the kind of glass I was hoping for on the new harbor condos next to the court house...would have been such and improvement over the dark smokey look.

Step away from the facade....it's really scary up close....At least it appears some kind of balconies will break it up.
