    Why is Boston So Ugly?

Shawn, I totally agree. And am continually dismayed by the development of the seaport. That Oslo scene....oy....Looks like a shelf of goods from a cheap department store.

Twenty Two Liberty @ Fan Pier | 22 Liberty Drive - Parcel C | Seaport

Re: Twenty Two Liberty @ Fan Pier | 22 Liberty Drive | Seaport Nothing like the rendering....again. A new Darth Vader building.

    100 Pier 4 | 136-146 Northern Avenue | Seaport

Re: Pier 4 Residential Tower | 136-146 Northern Avenue | Seaport They are not gas lights, nor designed as gas lights once were. They're similar to a lot of "center of town" lights I've seen in cities around Boston (cf Medford Sq). And they are probably cost effective compared to some more...

The Hub on Causeway (née TD Garden Towers) | 80 Causeway Street | West End

Re: The Boston Garden (TD Garden Towers) | 80 Causeway Street | West End Used to be a porn theater back in the 60's and 70's

MIT Officer Collier Memorial | MIT | Cambridge

I haven't seen it in person but the photo offers some sense of what the architect intended. For me it appears to be a three-dimensional cross-roads at the nexus of pathways, inviting introspection. Sometimes less is more, and a rest for the eyes and a lack of sense-stimulation allows for...

    Cambridge Infill and Small Developments

While I don't like this building as a great piece of architecture, that's true of 85% of what's being built today throughout the cities. There's only so much that can be done with modern architecture, short of the variegated surfaces that sometimes give me a headache, like optical illusions...

    Rose Kennedy Greenway

I hope the price paid for accessibility and camouflage is not a new set of walls that remind me of the old expressway?! I know these are just schematics....but they send a chill down my spine!

Public Food Market | 136 Blackstone Street | Haymarket | Downtown

Given the location of the new market the facade fine. The real story will be inside. Will it be affordable or just another yuppie/tourist hangout? Can they attract a decent variety of vendors who will not be gouging the public? I'm thinking now of Copley Sq market once a week...I'd wander...

South End Infill and Small Developments

Great use of London space...evocative of the ruins of abbeys throughout England...and appropriate use of architectural fragments. That section of Shawmut may have been perfect for a park for nearby residents...

Twenty Two Liberty @ Fan Pier | 22 Liberty Drive - Parcel C | Seaport

Re: Twenty Two Liberty @ Fan Pier | 22 Liberty Drive | Seaport Thought this would be a more crystalline facade with transparency and a good foil to the nauseatingly mirrored facades around it...tell me that that's only tinted plastic film which will be removed! Please....

There's a reason why the Catholic Church is against abortions! What a pity, indeed, a desecration! I agree with those who think it would be better torn down. I'll go a step further, tear it down and just leave a pile of rubble...that would be better than this rendering.

    Rose Kennedy Greenway

I agree Tombstoner...it's part of the reality/development of the place. Besides, nothing much else is happening on the greenway until spring/summer.

    Academic Building @ Suffolk U | 20 Somerset Street | Beacon Hill

You can play only so many tricks on the eye/brain before logic and internal sensory mechanisms rebel against what is seen. The brain continually shifts its perception for the moment and simply gets tired trying to figure it all out. This is the case with this building. The facade panels ought...

South End Infill and Small Developments

I shed a huge tear knowing this interior will be further compromised. The Jesuits already did the major un-doing of the architecture....let's hope someone will help preserve the best elements left.

    Rose Kennedy Greenway

I agree - seriously, if someone is sleeping outside let them sleep on the fucking bench... it's the most assholish thing to deliberately design benches that way. Moreover, sometime I MYSELF want to enjoy some sun on a random bench, and cant because of said design. Everybody loses. Objects...

500 Boylston Infill | 500 Boylston St | Back Bay

Re: 500 Boylston I also like both buildings. Glad that Johnson's was not repeated, and I generally enjoy Stern's work. I missed the ability to traverse through the buildings unimpeded after 9-11, and the winter garden in the Stern building turned out to be a joke, since it was almost...

Park Plaza's $95 million renovation | Back Bay

Re: Park Plaza's $95 million renovation When I was in college, commuting for 4 years from Woburn to B.U., I used to go to the Statler lobby to wait for my bus from the Trailways terminal back home. It was a warm and cozy place back then when plenty of couches and quiet mood music made a...

Malden + Melrose Infill and Small Developments

Re: Malden/Melrose Malden has been for a long time a mish-mash of urban styles. The density of apartment houses in some sections rivals Tremont St. in the South End. Double and triple-deckers are crowded together and more resemble parts of Everett. But then there is the West End with elegant...
