I agree with you all. The plus side of this memorial is that it is abstract/interactive sculpture which can enhance the area regardless of its deeper meaning. Much better than the first responders' memorials at the State House, which are literal, boring, and static. they are mean only to fill...

Re: Malden/Melrose It actually looks even worse in person. And it's next to a Ralph Adams Cram designed gothic Episcopal church, so the gross contrast is even worse....the buffering factor: parking between the two.

The color certainly has that effect, thought the line of BMW's, Mercedes, Mustang GTs and Volvos dropping off residents will counter that.

Dead at street level?? Ever walk through Northeastern? As an academic building it will be enlivened by...students. Every building built doesn't require space as a consumer marketplace.

^Will there be parking under this building? If so, I could see the garage going all the way to the edges of the plaza, up to the boundary with the sidewalk, in which case the plaza will be merely the "roof" of the garage.

Ahhhh...musicians are not the issue; the commuter rail and turnpike 20 feet from the rear of the building might be the reason for super-soundproofing....and therefore commanding higher rents.
