General MBTA Topics (Multi Modal, Budget, MassDOT)

Large enough to make it clear from the inside of a train arriving in a station. In some cases the historical signage is the only prominent thing you see out of the window of a given car. (Scollay Under, for example -- they are cool, big signs that used to be the primary wayfinding.)

    General Infrastructure

The Administration has even clawed back monies already distributed. Happened in NYC -- $80 million.

General MBTA Topics (Multi Modal, Budget, MassDOT)

People are definitely confused by the Scollay Under signs at Government Center -- they typically exist apart from modern signage. I have had to help tourists on the Blue Line realize that the stop was in fact Government Center. This is typical Boston arrogance that if you are not from here...

Hanover Everett | Second & Vine | Everett

It is "impressive" that the renderings never show the reality of the utility lines in this part of Everett.

    Lynn infill and small developments

Asking for clarification -- what is a small or infill project in the definition of these threads? A four building, 550 unit complex in Lynn is a small or infill project. But at 135 unit single building project in Everett has its own thread?

General MBTA Topics (Multi Modal, Budget, MassDOT)

These old mosaics are really great, and definitely should be salvaged -- in a transit museum. They have no place in active transit stations, particularly when they refer to station names that no longer exist. This is the ultimate example of poor wayfinding for infrequent transit users (like...

General MBTA Topics (Multi Modal, Budget, MassDOT)

Non-residential construction costs have escalated faster than general inflation. The multiplier from 1995 to 2025 is more like 3X

    The New Residential Conversion Thread

But they will be shiny and new -- inside, where it matters for living. And classic outside. They will sell for a premium (compared to new mid-rise construction -- not suggesting they will beat a penthouse on the 60th floor).

Ride & Car Sharing: Uber, Lyft, Sidecar, Zipcar, Relay Rides

Every (non-transit) vehicle entering the airport should be paying this fee.

    585 Kendall | 585 Third Street | Kendall Square

It might also be a rain screen cladding system, in which case those gaps are purposeful for ventilation behind the cladding (the actual waterproof layer is behind the cladding in rain screen). Rain screen approach is very energy efficient, and is often used with ceramic cladding (IIRC) (which...

South Station Tower | South Station Air Rights | Downtown

I agree that they need to cover the gap -- as you indicate something connected to only the old building could work fine.

South Station Tower | South Station Air Rights | Downtown

It will need to be some very flexible covering means to close that off, given the highly dissimilar construction methods of the two sections. They are not environmentally moving in sync.

MBTA "Transformation" (Green Line, Red Line, & Orange Line Transformation Projects)

Exactly, hedge fund CEOs are great at "plunder and pillage" management.

MBTA Commuter Rail (Operations, Keolis, & Short Term)

OK, I believe you -- but my experience at Amstel was seamless enough to feel timed. I have used the Zwolle transfers -- truly amazing (compared to rail performance in the US). You don't miss a beat moving from one train to the other to continue your journey.

MBTA Commuter Rail (Operations, Keolis, & Short Term)

Particularly at Amstel Station -- coordination between 3 metro lines and at least 2 intercity rail lines. Cross-platform timed transfers.

    Lab/Office | 109 Brookline Avenue | Fenway

Maybe, but there is a lot more low-rise across the street that is riper for redevelopment than the medical building. 99 Brookline is vascular biology research center (not just "offices") -- so not the kind of expensive build-out you just throw away.

MBTA Commuter Rail (Operations, Keolis, & Short Term)

How can the Dutch coordinate trains without slowing service? Oh, right, they actually know how to run a railroad.

MBTA Commuter Rail (Operations, Keolis, & Short Term)

The only way people would backtrack is if the MBTA could offer synchronized connections. And we know the T is no where close to synchronized connection performance.
