Regional New England Rail (Amtrak & State DOT & NEC)

Great news, but someone need to talk with the State official about the concept of supply and demand. "State officials say ridership is outpacing demand." is a nonsense statement. The ridership is the demand. Ridership might be outpacing the supply (available seats, time slots, etc.) of the...

Other People's Rail: Amtrak, commuter rail, rapid transit news & views outside New England

BEMUs appear to have decent accel/decel now, but you have to sacrifice passenger space, capacity for the batteries. There is no free lunch.

MBTA Commuter Rail (Operations, Keolis, & Short Term)

Conceptually a good article, but not very well researched. By including Swampscott in the locations that have underutilized space that is ripe for TOD at the Commuter Rail, he lost me completely. (Lynn would be a much better example.) Swampscott's MBTA station has two small surface parking...

Everett Transportation (SL3 extension, potential OLX/GLX, Sweetser Circle infill station)

One really has to wonder how much the Docklands and Commercial Triangle developments are going to shift the population center of gravity of Everett. There is a lot of concern that the rail corridor does not hit the population center of Everett, but will that be as true once these are all built out?

Everett Transportation (SL3 extension, potential OLX/GLX, Sweetser Circle infill station)

I believe F-Line has also indicate there is some point in the ROW near the Everett/Chelsea line where the LRT would need to switch sides of the ROW -- creating the need for a duck under or something similar.

Great Scott Redevelopment | 1 Harvard Ave | Allston

To my eye, the two sides have equivalent crenelation. Just the lighting is different.

    MBTA Buses & Infrastructure

Well, only BC station, but sure (and I believe the last light on the line is in Boston). Boston should do the rest (but the T announcement did not specify the Green Line).

Likely need Brookline and Newton on board before that happens.

Police Details, Cameras, & Enforcement Methods

But those stroads are exactly the ones that need to be slowed down. So let the speeding commuters whine and snivel, so long as they are not killing others anymore..

But the timing of such grants rarely aligns with the follow-on timing for real project funding. By the time the Feds start funding projects, the design and outreach is considered "out-of-date" and needs to be redone. Rinse and repeat. Out-of-date planning work as a great excuse for NIMBYs to...

Police Details, Cameras, & Enforcement Methods

You mean as opposed to today's corruptly implemented lack of fines for scofflaws, where Massachusetts police officers get massive overtime for looking the other way and not ticketing anybody?

    Wind Turbines in Mass

Three-year old logic. Mean Brits put wind turbines off of my Scottish Golf Course. They are ugly. Wind turbines -- all bad.

Roads and Highways General Development Thread

We have a shortage of projects that actually qualify for the funding. To pass these funding measures, a lot of complex qualifiers were attached to the funding. Many project that logically should qualify don't without retooling. Go look at the legislation -- it is full of constraints that make...

Roads and Highways General Development Thread

Generally these allocation bills require the states to have defined projects for the funds to support. It takes time for the states to spin up the projects for the funds requests (the bills also include lots of rules about the nature/features of the projects). Feds cannot just send funds out...

    Marine Industrial Park | Seaport

OK, so the garbage dump is really the fill that enlarged the (two) islands into one. Got it. Even the Big Dig official record (MassDOT) on this gets it wrong.

    Marine Industrial Park | Seaport

Dirt was not just added on top of Spectacle Island. Before the Big Dig, Spectacle Island was approximately 49 acres in size, while after the project, which used the island as a dumping ground for excavated soil, it significantly increased to around 105 acres, with the majority of the new...

50 Herald Street | Chinatown / South End

Size is dictated by available financing means. You want more modest priced units get someone in power to pony up the cash. CCBA does have a focus in affordable units. But the only other choice is the direction that the ACDC takes, which is about 50% affordable, 50% luxury. Neither way...

Cape Cod Rail, Bridges and Highways

Just guessing, but likely easier to maintain while also keeping traffic flowing. You can close one bridge for major maintenance and still have the other open with reduced bi-directional traffic. Much more effective for maintenance than just lane restricting a single bridge. Also likely speeds...

I-90 Interchange Improvement Project & West Station | Allston

But it is not really shifting money away from education. All the monies anticipated to go to education will still go there (from the millionaires tax). This is taking unexpected tax receipts and applying them to another need.

    Crazy Transit Pitches

I agree. But it does not take very many clueless riders on they devices, standing in front of a door, and not moving, to clog up the works. If riders would just step back away from the train if they are not boarding it would be a big help.
