Photo of the Day, Boston Style: Part VI (2013)

I want to say Boston should standardize its traffic light arms, but I guess it has and is just slowly replacing the old diagonal arms with horizontal ones. Not sure I like. Nice, moody shot though.

Charlesview Redevelopment | Western Ave | Allston

I can't wait for further urbanism to steamroll that McDonald's parking lot. Of course, I'm sure someone will object to "community character" being ruined when it happens.

    Millennium Tower (Filene's) | 426 Washington Street | Downtown

Re: Millennium Tower - Filene's Agreed; the only thing that will fix this is an even taller spire. I do like the way the Philly skyline crescendos, though. But mostly in cooler, fertile river valleys or mountainous coastal regions where evaporating sea moisture is trapped by altitude. Not...

    Then and Now

Well, relative to the 1988-1997 period, when only one building in that shot went up, it's a lot.

    Then and Now

1988 vs. 2013 slider skyline shot from the Globe. Amazing how little changed between 1988 and when I first moved to the area in 1997. Most new construction from the 2000s decade. http://www.bostonglobe.com/2013/05/28/the-boston-skyline-and/w4SBNnuraDJz1GVN949moJ/story.html

    Boston population rises to 645K

I wonder if it'd mean we always considered metro rather than city limits populations, the way Australia (where Sydney "city" has just a few dozen thousand people) does.

    Millennium Tower (Filene's) | 426 Washington Street | Downtown

Re: Millennium Tower - Filene's If it were in the Seaport we'd lament the cladding but applaud the variation in the roofline.

Seriously, I would axe murder the Bowker just to improve that shot. </rant>

    Boston population rises to 645K

Obviously metro is a better metric. But then compare Boston to a city of similar area size. Boston has 48 square land miles, San Francisco has 46. And within that area, San Francisco has 815,000 people. Boston proper can still do better.

    Allston-Brighton Infill and Small Developments

Seriously, how do the owner and architect of that not throw up in their mouths in disgust over what they've done when passing by it?

I'd say the Bowker Overpass looks good in those shots mostly because it's not in the first one and covered by trees in the second. In the third, still looks like shit. The photography is great though.

Lovejoy Wharf - Hoffman Building | 160 North Washington Street | West End

Re: Lovejoy Wharf I'm sure people would've still lived in it or offices could've used it with the columns as is. Not every building use is a lab or trading floor with highly specialized requirements. Lots of tenants like quirky spaces.

    Boston 2024

Believe it or not giving the people who write studies cash is a stimulus, too. The government giving money to anyone is a stimulus. Maybe not as good a use of money as direct investment in infrastructure, but any investment in infrastructure would require a study, whether it happened or not -...
