Ha, I had no idea the CVS had moved in next door. Cray.

    Boston 2024

Something tells me you'd manage to wrangle more and better corporate sponsors with an Olympic bid than with random transit station overhauls here or there. Maybe it wouldn't reduce the cost to other potential improvements that much, but it's not a zero sum thing we're talking about. Not to...

The Victor | 110 Beverly Street | West End

Re: The Victor Exactly. Particularized solutions never worked for Boston. It really rebounded as a beneficiary of broader trends during the 80s and 90s toward financial services, meds+eds, and urban living. Detroit had a one track industrial economy and couldn't take advantage of this shift...

That Russian sculpture is kind of creepy. What is it, a tear in a crack? Also, the Lower Manhattan skyline desperately needs the other WTC towers now. Looks horrible from that angle.

I assume some of that $10m, at least, would come from corporate sponsors, if not most of it.

    The New Retail Thread

Imagine City Hall Plaza and the Govt Center Garage area being redeveloped in high density residential and Quincy Market becoming at least half an actual produce market again...would be too good to be true.

Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital | Navy Yard | Charlestown

Don't know if this was meant in jest, but it is definitely more remote. And doesn't seem like it lends itself to great urbanism. But still, obviously, very nice design compared to what usually goes up in Boston.

The Victor | 110 Beverly Street | West End

Re: The Victor ^ There would be a ton more yuppies living in the West End today if CRP hadn't laid waste to it, and their contribution to the tax base would've been far higher. What's missing here is a comparison to a much more apt case study: NYC, where very little or limited urban renewal...

Wrong color scheme for Harvard and fairly dull at that.

    Boston 2024

Untrue. Urban planning and "what a city looks like" are arguably two of the most important parts of any bid - the technical side (i.e. transport, planning of the location of facilities, etc.) and the ability to wow the IOC with compelling images and visits. My understanding is that the USOC...

    Uniform color cabs

From what I recall they don't all have these, especially in the outer jurisdictions like Cambridge and Brookline. It gets easy to confuse those with things like pizza delivery cars and MBTA The Ride cars, especially from a distance or at night. As for that "paint it white" regulation - seems...

The Victor | 110 Beverly Street | West End

Re: The Victor This "dying like Detroit is today" is a total myth, probably propagated by people who were either involved in the dirty deed or are tireless Boston apologists who hate anyone seeing fault in the city's present day condition. Today's Boston economy is energized by hospitals and...

Liberty Mutual Tower | 157 Berkeley Street | Back Bay

Re: Liberty Mutual plans major Boston expansion Yeah; it looks okay from angles other than from the south. Even hard to imagine the Back Bay skyline from the Charles without it now. Don't know why the south facade bothers me so much more.

    Uniform color cabs

This is a collective action problem. You can claim the market will solve for this and that cabbies will pick the color that stands out, but if they all pick different colors, that doesn't send a strong signal to consumers. If the benefit to the consumer (and to the cabbies who might get more...

    Uniform color cabs

So DC has finally, after lots of thought and effort, decided to impose a uniform taxi color like NYC's: http://www.washingtoncitypaper.com/blogs/citydesk/2013/05/01/new-cab-design-is-inspired-by-circulator-buses/ Question: Has Boston even ever considered this? If not, why? The city would stand...

    W Hotel | 100 Stuart St | Theater District

Re: W Hotel I'd be content with a facade reno of that windowless first few floors. Worried that any replacement wouldn't be nearly as dense or wouldn't be fully residential.

    Boston 2024

While I think Philly would make a good option, I don't think it would beat LA, Chicago, or Baltimore/Washington, if the latter two jump into the ring. LA is a very well-known, successful host (like London, or Tokyo), DC has more international appeal and Chicago is already known on the bidding...
