The first is recent, with 33 Arch (2004) standing. The 2nd and third are from around 1990 with One International Place ('87) but not TWO IP ('92).

    Portland Public Market's future

http://www.theforecaster.net/story.php?storyid=13751&ftype=search Former Public Market eyed for arts center By Kate Bucklin (published: February 14, 2008) PORTLAND ? The former Portland Public Market in the Bayside neighborhood is being considered as a location for an arts and education center...

    Why Portland?

I think almost all of Portland's newer buildings are ugly as heck. And it looks like new office and residential towers are trending toward having a fat footprint with clumsily masked garages. The Portland Museum of Art's Payson building is a major exception. So is the Hilton Garden Inn, which...

    Why Portland?

A Denver blogger had great things to say about the Monument Square Farmers Market. http://www.denverinfill.com/blog/archives/2006_10_01_archive.html (scroll down) New Bedford looked at Portland's success and tried to create a formula for revitalization: abandoned department store + college =...

Does anyone know of any area colleges with good Masters programs in Urban Planning?

I'm not dismissing your desire to leave Portland, but just for the sake of having all the information you should know that the Muskie School offers a joint Law/Planning degree with Maine Law (4 years) and you can take a couple Muskie classes before enrolling.

Photo of the Day, Boston Style - Part Deux

Ignoring the cost we could put infinite resources into teleportation. Then the Silver Line would allow instant transport between any two points in the universe.

    Waterside Place 1A | 505 Congress Street | Seaport

Re: Waterside Place Examples of places with parking lots nicely placed behind buildings: Davis Square, downtown Melrose and downtown Northampton. "Also ... aren't nearly all downtowns prewar?" Good point. I suppose I'm thinking of the preserved prewar parts of downtowns as opposed to later...

    North Station Expansion Project

I don't have any pictures. The Dunks and Emack are behind temporary walls anyway.

    North Station Expansion Project

The expanded concourse has a Dunkin Donuts and an Emack and Bolio's on the verge of opening, in addition to a newsstand and some sort of bar already in operation.

    Waterside Place 1A | 505 Congress Street | Seaport

Re: Waterside Place Not all parking lots are our enemy. I have nothing against the lots behind buildings in prewar downtowns, for example.

    State Theater, Portland

I wonder if Maine College of Art would care to continue its trend of enlivening the neighborhood by taking over the State Theater.

Huge projects unveiled for Portland waterfront

Can someone tell me how major cruise ships work in Portland? Do the leave from Portland or stop between destinations? If they stop between destinations, do passengers flood the peninsula and spend money?

    Amtrak Downeaster in trouble?

So far two of my four Downeaster trips have had 20-30 minute delays. But you can't beat the price (< $13 when buying 6 tix at student rate), comfort (more space, smoother, cafe car and electric outlets) and nostalgic thrill of riding a train through three states.

Cheap and easy Boston improvement ideas

If I haven't said this before: If the MBTA can't make the automated announcement system on the newer Red Line cars work, it should be disabled. I'm embarrassed for Boston when visitors hear the conductor arguing with the automated voice.

    Why Portland?

I found two more Asian markets! Both are in what I think is the West End, near Maine Medical Center. On Congress St. St. John St., a little way down from MMC

    Why Portland?

I forget exactly where I found this one, but it is Portland's most radical mural. We happened to snap this one too. And for the heck of it, here's a shot of my favorite building in Portland.

    Why Portland?

This says new Bedford banked on Portland's model of revitalizing a downtown district by bringing a school into a key vacant building. http://archive.southcoasttoday.com/daily/11-96/11-04-96/a01lo009.htm I'd add the many murals on what would otherwise be blank walls to your list of things that...
