Old Port Square (née Canal Plaza) | Portland

If this tower were to actually get built at its proposed height of 380', Maine's tallest would surpass the tallest in 13 other states: Alaska, Delaware, Idaho, Mississippi, Montana, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Carolina, South Dakota, Vermont, West Virginia and Wyoming.

I would consider that option too but when you hire one of the world's most acclaimed architects it might be difficult to convince him remove a major portion of his vision. Compromise, maybe?

I agree with Max and TC concerning the roof top. If the canopy/overhang was trimmed by around 50 percent I think the overall appearance would be more visually aesthetic and a little less awkward. That said, I'll still take the current design over no tower at all.

All of the Canal addresses will now be Middle Street. Canal will be no longer but there may be a marker to pay tribute to the history of the former bank and plaza along with potential recognition to Plum Street. Jacob is onboard with the historical importance. (y)

Just returned from the unveiling which was a nice event with around 100 attendees. Have known Tim Soley for many years and he introduced me to the legendary architect Moshe Safdie and also had a chance to meet Jacob Soley who was very kind and accommodating. Portland's future is in good hands...

    Augusta, Maine

Because it is the third smallest State Capital (Pierre and Montpelier) I think it gets overlooked on the national level and Mainers just except it for what it is which is a mid sized (for Maine) river town that is prone to flooding when the Kennebec melts. The downtown proper is limited in...
