They are filling in the pit. I heard that an employee there said they'll be filling it in longer than they have been taking out. My concern is what is being used to fill it in, I have a feeling they are not too concerned what is in the dump trucks.

Portland, ME - New Construction Continued

If that design goes forward, and is built where the old church was, it will appear as though it fell from the sky as an over-sized block, and landed among buildings of a completely different design. I can not say I like it at all.

    Eastern Waterfront

Not too "affordable". And wait until the prospective buyers hear the traffic on the arterial. Be just like living next to the "pike".

I went by there yesterday and it looks pretty much the same.

    Portland Transportation Center

I don't know about this location for a train station/platform. It was considered for the site for the new police station a few years ago, and it was stated that due to its' proximity to the river, that flooding could easily occur. So the site was removed from consideration. But, that was...

    Portland Bayside

I agree with you wholeheartedly on that statement. Once the properties are "destroyed", the taxpayers will fund another rehab to make them pretty again. Anyone who has driven down Franklin Street in the winter only has to look over at the Bayside Terrace complex, and see the windows wide open...

    DESIGN A BETTER PORTLAND

I agree with you Corey. I venture into Portland every weekend. One of them, I was down on State Street below Spring Street. I could not believe the speed of the traffic headed to the bridge. I crossed when the way was clear near Gray Street, and barely made it before a big gray Mercedes came...

    U.S. Customs House in Portland

Here is a link as to the inside as it once was and as I remember it as well: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=340734995990933&set=a.329444590453307.79083.124967760900992&type=3&theater

Those Pedi-Cabs are a great idea for Portland. I might try one myself this summer to get uptown from the waterfront and back down. I wonder if the city will regulate them too hard to cause them to charge high rates?

@ Corey, I am interested in what kind of wide angle lens you used.

Black & White Portland, views from the 40's and 50's

It was Somma's, before that it was the "Park's Department Clothing Store". They used the old yellow plastic see through curtains in the windows to stop the sun from fading the window displays.

So is the architectural salvage company going out of business? It appears that the flea market is going to be in the same building. Unless there is enough room for both of course.

"Also, even if it were, they can always buy the supra-adjacent air development rights, which is what they should have done here. Change the zoning to 65’ and then sell 10’ to the neighbors." This is a great idea, but why make people buy air to keep building height down to their acceptable level...

Portland, ME - New Construction Continued

This brought a memory back when the very end of Emery Street did have a set of wooden stairs that went all the way down to Commercial Street. I imagine the railroad built and maintained them as a way for workers from the neighborhood could get down to their workplaces in the waterfront area...

    U.S. Customs House in Portland

I understand the Customs House on Fore Street will be empty by the end of next week, and for the time being will remain in the GSA custody, but may go up for sale after a time. The heating costs, and lack of parking was a major issue for the last agency to use the building (ICE), and they are...
