    Allston-Brighton Infill and Small Developments

Would a rotary improve the pedestrian experience here? I never liked this intersection when I lived near here because it requires two or three steps to cross the thing. Also, it's too bad that the really nice clock there is in the middle of a median island, where few people stop to look at it...

    Arcades vs Awnings

For what it's worth, I tend to walk along Mass Ave. quite often on my commute and I've always appreciated the arcade along the Church Park apartment building in hot or rainy weather. Although that building itself is set back a ridiculous distance from the road (and that definitely does not...

This article says August 8th for Hubway launch in Brookline.

    Route 9 high rises eyed

Looks like the sale of the Atrium mall has been finalized. The article doesn't mention what the plans are for existing retail. Also, what's the point of LEED Gold certifying a suburban mall turned offices?

Assembly Square Infill and Small Developments | Somerville

Re: Assembly Square Redevelopment True, but Ikea does deliveries and it's not really necessary to actually drive to the store to get their products home. I'd much rather be able to take a train to Ikea, buy what I need, and have it delivered, especially since the Zipcar rental cost and the...

    Brookline Infill and Small Developments

I used to walk by that lot all the time. I'm glad it's going to good use. In other news, apparently there have been talks with developers for re-developing the Durgin Garage in Coolidge Corner. The article is here. It's really too bad that this building is in such a sorry state given that the...

    Biking in Boston

That's a ridiculous conclusion. You're completely ignoring the network effect that having both good bicycle infrastructure and good transit can have. Cycling can be the "last-mile", especially with bike sharing or with better bike storage at transit stations. It's not "walking vs. bicycling vs...

    BU New Balance Field

Do you know if the plan for that is to replace the current Sweeney Field or relocate it to a less prominent location and build academic/residential buildings on Huntington?

General MBTA Topics (Multi Modal, Budget, MassDOT)

Re: Driven By Customer 'Service' Parte Dos Your suggestion is a regressive idea and will have unfortunate outcomes for neighborhoods which already get shafted in the public transit service game (e.g., Roxbury).

    A-Line Reactivation

That sounds like a potentially good idea. Some places like British Columbia have already done tax swaps (though in their case a carbon tax) seemingly successfully. Maybe a road pricing tax swap would work well.

    Biking in Boston

When a bicyclist runs red lights, people complain that they are breaking the law (and might get ticketed). When they habitually obey the traffic rules, there are also complaints. What is a bicyclist to do?

    Enclose D-Line Stations

These have always confused me since before the new boarding policies, people would always just wave their Charlie Cards at the rear doors and the drivers didn't seem to care at all (this was at the Reservoir stop).

    A-Line Reactivation

There are also plenty of younger people in their 20s (myself included) who may eventually decide to have a family and who would much rather live in an urban environment that's good for families and doesn't require a car. If you ignore this demographic, they'll just move to places like Vancouver...

    Enclose D-Line Stations

I wish the MBTA would do this. San Francisco has implemented all-door boarding for the Muni and their world didn't end.

Winthrop Center | 115 Winthrop Square | Financial District

Re: Trans National Place (Winthrop Square) Part 2 Also, the street level interaction is actually pretty good in downtown Vancouver. Less so nearer South Creek and Coal Harbor though. And SkyTrain has been extremely successful in encouraging dense new developments in Metro Vancouver, which...

    Sidewalks in Beantown

Cargo bicycles like the Xtracycle can actually carry most heavy objects people need to transport. Obviously, that's not practical, but that's what delivery trucks are for and those aren't the things causing congestion at rush hour.

General MBTA Topics (Multi Modal, Budget, MassDOT)

Re: Driven By Customer 'Service' Parte Dos They are seriously proposing these as interim solutions for a transit line extension that would get thousands of riders? A solution that would directly subsidize car use? If only this were a joke.

    Sidewalks in Beantown

I'm a bicyclist, transit rider, and pedestrian. I've got to say I don't think it's productive to pit any of these other modes against cycling when the real competition is auto infrastructure. Most cycling-related expenditures are peanuts when compared to transit or auto infrastructure anyway...

    The New Retail Thread

Uniqlo is an interesting store. They sell their jeans and pants in a single length and will tailor them for free to fit your size. Their SoHo store is pretty big (three or four floors, IIRC).
