South Boston Infill and Small Developments

It's too bad - looks like they replaced the most intricate historic Victorian elements of the exterior and replaced them with interchangeable Lego pieces. Does anyone know the name for the "Lego elements" aesthetic that has come to dominate single-family carpentry/construction the last few...

Hurley Building Redevelopment | 19 Staniford St | West End

Why? Why?! WHY?!!?! This is utterly moronic. What on earth is worth preserving in this abortion of a building? Where was this requirement when Druker was tearing down actually historic structures (not urban renewal mega-pustules) across the street from the Arlington Street Church?

^^ Yeah, would love to see more 'superblock developments' in Boston recognize that it IS in fact possible to have >1 building on a single block (wowzers!).

    Gillette leaving Southie.

Yeah, it'll be a real missed opportunity if they don't reuse some of the old industrial buildings. I'd love to see a creative reuse (including building on top) for the iconic low-rise "World Shaving Headquarters" building... But even in the absence of that, the buildings on W 2nd St, btw Dot...

The Marc (former Our Lady of Victories Church) | 25-29 Isabella Street | Bay Villiage

Disagree 100% about the Lucas. It's nothing less than dystopian from most angles. But don't want to derail this thread.

Hopefully this one turns out less horrible than "the Lucas."

    Rose Kennedy Greenway

Yeah, the city needs to clean that up stat. And place a few $200 Ring cameras in the area to capture attempts to repeat the offense.

So it's <30% residential. It's wildly hypocritical how much commercial/office Boston continues to build, and how little residential, despite the constant hectoring by MA politicians about the need for more housing. Will the state's political/media elite ask Boston politicians to take a dose of...

Commonwealth Pier Revitalization (née Seaport WTC)| 200 Seaport Boulevard | Seaport

It's too bad this museum isn't on Wall Street any longer (was flooded out of its home in 2018), where it was truly appropriate. That said, it seemed to be a great museum from what I read and it's great for Boston that it's found a new home here.

    The New Office/Lab Thread

I'm skeptical about that data. NYC has a pretty good amount of construction going on. I know a lot is residential, but there are some MASSIVE office buildings going up (like the new JPMorgan tower). Hard to believe Boston has over 2.5x as much space currently under construction.

Lyra (née The Huntington) | 252/258/264 Huntington Avenue | Fenway

Other than the Midtown Hotel and almost all of what was once the West End, Symphony Towers are about the worst thing in the city. So painful to see.

Lyra (née The Huntington) | 252/258/264 Huntington Avenue | Fenway

What this area really needs is for Symphony Towers to be demo'd. When's that going to happen?

Longwood Place (Simmons Residential Campus) | 305 Brookline Avenue | Longwood

Completely agree. This entire row of masonry buildings is nice. There are so many parking lots or horrendous relics from Urban Renewal in the city ... such a shame when we miss the opportunity to address those and instead replace the structures that make the city pleasant with Assembly...

New-build classical architecture (evoking old styles)

^^ Sheesh, why can't we do that in Boston? We're certainly quite a bit richer than the Paris suburbs on a per capita basis, so it's BS to say it's financials. Next big hunk of land we divvy up ... the Allston railyards, Widett Circle, whatever ... once, just once, can we not do super-blocks...

    Bulfinch Triangle rezoning

Then the city should either: - force developers to break up their lot (with an alley between two buildings) - or - if they're too wimpy to stand in the way of awful blocklong landscrapers - the city could at least force landscraper developers to create alcoves in their landscraper buildings to...

Pier 5 Redevelopment | Navy Yard | Charlestown

Disagree - the coast should be interesting and lively for people first and foremost. You can build housing and have amenities, restaurants/bars, retail and public access around it. The vibrant Amalfi Coast towns are highly privatized and built up with housing. More locally, so is Rockport (not...

Pier 5 Redevelopment | Navy Yard | Charlestown

I like the Courageous Sailing plan - but also would have preferred housing. Moving forward with that would have been some Courageous Acting on the part of the city.

City Hall Plaza Revamp | Government Center

^^ Amazing how well-activated and loved by the people the plaza is after the city's recent investments. Clearly now living up to the stated vision in the 1960s that it would be the Piazza San Marco of Boston.
