    Biking in Boston

Probably not, but with a giant pile of asterisks about the word "appropriate". - If the turn lanes aren't sized appropriately, a turning queue backup now stops all thru-traffic. - Away from the intersections, if there isn't a constant center turn lane + there's anything at all to make a left...

Large outdoor amphitheaters tend to be built in the middle of nothing and not near transit - often not even great road infrastructure. Noise complaints are I think a big factor. You really don't want to have much of anything in the direction of the speakers for a mile or so. Pretty sure it's...

MBTA Fare System (Charlie, AFC 2.0, Zone, Discounts)

Cubic also built/operated the original Metrocard system for the NYC MTA. Which likely makes it a much simpler project - they're upgrading their own system, vs having to upgrade/transition from another vendor's system (which is what's happening at the MBTA).

Fall River/New Bedford Commuter Rail (South Coast Rail)

~3/4 mile (including the bridge) or so to really get to Downtown, but should be just a mellow walk over the bridge and the sidewalks. The Purchase/Hillman intersection could probably use pedestrian improvements but that's the only spot that looks questionable to my perspective. Some possibility...

Fall River/New Bedford Commuter Rail (South Coast Rail)

It's where the line goes + the closest they can easily get it to downtown. SCR isn't creating a new right of way. That said, there are plans to road diet/redesign MA-18 in the area as well, that's just out of scope of this and years off...

I agree with your general point. With that said, Dot Ave is going through redev pretty fast and pretty much none of that industrial on the east side of the tracks is likely to stay long-term. Much of what's industrial/vacant there now already has active redev plans. Still doesn't provide any...

Infrastructure to Nowhere (The Vestigial Infrastructure Thread)

Theoretically I think that's supposed to eventually connect to the (currently unbuilt) South Bank Bridge and a new pedestrian crossing of the Charles either on or next to the drawbridge (which is in progress for a replacement - unclear on if that project still includes the pedestrian walkway or...

Infrastructure to Nowhere (The Vestigial Infrastructure Thread)

Huh? Neptune Rd was/is directly in the line of the centerline of one of Logan's primary runways, which needed to be extended for the modern era. If the homes hadn't been demolished they'd have an absolutely terrible quality of life. How the eminent domain was handled was terrible by all...

Infrastructure to Nowhere (The Vestigial Infrastructure Thread)

That's wild. Looks like it's been like that for over 10 years. And like the only thing they've changed on it in that time is to....put up no parking signs. Even though this seems you might as well use it for parking if you are going to leave it that way.

Infrastructure to Nowhere (The Vestigial Infrastructure Thread)

That stop was still on the books + still had a sign posted until within the past 5-10 years or so. If you're looking at Street View note that the stop/signpost was in that little pull-off about 250ft back from the bridge itself, was still there through the Aug 2015 streetview, gone by the Sept...

Skimming the 3/23/23 board presentation, I found the numbers presented in a curious manner, that IMO seemed to take some pains to avoid noting anything about historical actual operating headcounts. The MBTA indicates it currently has approximately 5,600 (operating) workers as of Feb 2023 in...

Not sure looking at "since 1946" numbers and imagining safety standards in 1946 + 2006 were the same makes for a very fair average. Looking at the article, I see: "Since 2000, nine have been killed, according to the tally." So that would suggest a rate of 1.28/yr for 2000-06. I'm not sure the...

Fall River/New Bedford Commuter Rail (South Coast Rail)

I will note that DAATCO was more like $17-20/RT for a regular rider (10-trip tickets or monthly passes). I'll mention that DeCamp buses in NJ also announced termination of their commuter routes this week, and (unlike DAATCO) have some numbers, which by my math work out to a roughly 50% decline...

While I believe this, is there some sort of reason they're unable to do single-track operations on segments they want to work on after the PM rush when both demand and scheduled service is already low? And if frequency has to be cut a little lower, it's still vastly less disruptive to have a...

Regional Rail (RUR) & North-South Rail Link (NSRL)

I am very interested in transit services with 9 second headways, I think that is the kind of service level every transit agency should look to provide.

155 North Beacon Street | Brighton

I wonder if that may be partially for abutting properties? I have spent some time in one of the apartment buildings across the street. They are old and not particularly well soundproofed. Keeping the entrances down by Glencoe (and from Life St) will likely also keep most of the...

I'll offer a theory which may be controversial and I may have stated before: I think the MBTA's job structure for many positions is extremely unattractive to most of the general public, and that the traditional seniority-based system of shift/route/task allocation basically makes it impossible...

    Commuter Rail to New Hampshire?

Those all require federal approval. Federal approval which is IMO unlikely to be granted if a neighboring state has major objections, especially for a proposed toll which can likely be proven to disproportionately affect that state's residents. Said state would probably even have a Commerce...

    Commuter Rail to New Hampshire?

Federal law. Short of an exception it's absolutely not going to get, MA would probably need to pay back the feds every federal dollar paid to build and maintain I-93 in MA from it's inception until now, with interest. And wouldn't receive any further federal $ for it.

Not saying you're wrong necessarily, but I'll note that appears to have been accounted for? Looks like they removed the MGH-Park St slow zone on 2/16 in both directions on their tracker. It just looks to have been outweighed by some much larger new delays SB Wollaston-Quincy and to a lesser...
