New Red and Orange Line Cars

Gas tax goes down in real terms each year we don't raise it, and we've only raised the gas tax a whopping $.03 (7%) since the early 90s. And gas taxes, tolls, etc don't come close to funding roads.

Well it have a reference to Silver Line to Sullivan which would be half the urban ring. Though even that is stuck in the post-2040 "big ideas"

MBTA Fare System (Charlie, AFC 2.0, Zone, Discounts)

A couple people have complained on reddit over the past week of having difficultly getting Charlie Cards. They report employees saying that they haven't been getting new ones lately and even indicated that no more would be coming since Charlie Cards are being phased out. Since we're over a year...

    Comm Ave Bridge Replacement.

Sort of (the typical LRT on the 3rd chart is a single branch of the B-Line), but regardless B-Line ridership still above what we could reasonably expect from Comm Ave BRT. Focus more on the limits of BRT. Metro Orange Line (which again is a good analogue for a hypothetical Comm Ave BRT since...

    Comm Ave Bridge Replacement.

I remain unconvinced on capacity. Here's a good post by Ari on the capacity of BRT. Take particular note of the references to Metro Orange Line in LA since it would be a pretty good analogue to the type of BRT we could put on Comm Ave, and keep in mind that the Metro Orange Line has ridership...

General MBTA Topics (Multi Modal, Budget, MassDOT)

They twice say the pedestrian tunnels have "potential to connect the Red and Blue Lines" and the pedestrian tunnels are mentioned on 4 separate big idea pages. Also I don't trust MassDOT to not use this as another excuse to scrap a R-B connection the next time they need funds to add more lanes...

    Comm Ave Bridge Replacement.

First of all, aren't most of the lights on Comm Ave through the closure off right now? Second, could buses even support the B-Line's current capacity? Third, I actually wrote a post in the Green Line Reconfiguration thread on getting rid of the lights on each side of BU East.

General MBTA Topics (Multi Modal, Budget, MassDOT)

We shouldn't be letting them get away with having people walk through crowded orange line platforms being called "connecting" the red and blue lines. And it's definitely not a big idea.

    Outage

I don't think it would be necessary to go that far. I created this list of threads here with the idea that we might be able to start new threads with links back to the equivalent discussion here. Though obviously we would want to archive the content here somewhere else rather than just linking here.

Re: T construction news I don't feel like they've done anything to make laying down more difficult.

Re: North-South Rail Link The cost of construction for GLX is $1.1 billion.

Regional Rail (RUR) & North-South Rail Link (NSRL)

Regional Rail (RUR) & North-South Rail Link (NSRL)

Re: North-South Rail Link Considering that the Pearl/Congress route has the cheapest electrification cost, but involves a second tunnel, it doesn't seem like they're saying that the cost of electrifying the tunnels is a huge concern. Also there aren't any movable bridges on the corridors...

Regional Rail (RUR) & North-South Rail Link (NSRL)

Re: North-South Rail Link Does anyone else the cost for electrification is absurdly high? Including the tunnel itself, they're proposing electrifying <20 miles, yet they're saying electrification will cost >$450 million (>$22 million per mile).

Regional Rail (RUR) & North-South Rail Link (NSRL)

Re: North-South Rail Link That would have been the Piccadily Line, which is a tube line. Chicago already has an equivalent service to this via the Blue Line to O'Hare.

Regional Rail (RUR) & North-South Rail Link (NSRL)

Re: North-South Rail Link That appears to be similar to the capacity London had to Heathrow via Heathrow Express and Heathrow Connect; 1500 seats per hour in rail style seating that wouldn't have a huge amount of standing room. Though of course they built that as a conventional rail line which...

    Crazy Transit Pitches

Let's not imply people opposing this would have been racist. Having people switch to subway would add 10-30 minutes (depending on whether the subway has an express service and how good it is) to a suburban commute. Also the commuter rail services that would have been cut off did not exist at...

    MBTA Buses & Infrastructure

This would be the likely link for Somerville traffic planning. For Lechmere, that's in Cambridge and I think McGrath is run by MassDOT and doesn't have street parking. I imagine GLX will make this a moot point before MassDOT will take a lane of traffic for busses
