    Biking in Boston

When I walk my bike I take up most of the sidewalk; when I ride I use a narrower cross-section than your typical walking person. I think there's some concern about people riding at speed among pedestrians and that is reasonable. But a bunch of people walking bikes is going to be way more...

Town & Gown: The role of schools and universities in Boston

Re: Town Vs Gown: The role of schools and universities in Boston Yes, it's a major problem that Boston lets itself get chopped up into institutional 'turfdoms' of various sorts. Becomes less of a city and more of a collection of office parks.

    Overpasses in and around Boston

The absurd wideness of the 'highway' is even more glaring.

Acela & Amtrak NEC (HSR BOS-NYP-WAS and branches only)

Indeed, it is not Amtrak's fault nor am I blaming them. However, it remains true that the discussion thread about Amtrak's grand plans for HSR currently ends in a 'train wreck' quite literally...

Acela & Amtrak NEC (HSR BOS-NYP-WAS and branches only)

There's something deliciously ironic about a thread supposedly about "Amtrak's $117 Billion Plan For High Speed Travel" now on the topic of the above image. Yes, it's mainly cosmetic, but still, much like Amtrak, it's a train wreck. Thankfully nobody was killed. Looks like the engineer got...

    Casey Overpass

Yeah, that's why it's best to keep roundabouts away from traffic signals. One keeps the flow going, one keeps stopping it.

    Commuter Rail Reconfiguration

Someone called the non-stop between Cambridge and King's Cross the "Cambridge flyer" today. So that could work. 55 rail miles in 47 minutes. Bullet somewhat implies high-speed. But Caltrain abuses that too with their 'baby bullet' schedule. Oh well.

    The other Cambridge

I wasn't allowed here: In London they THINK BIKE Turns out London has lots of little canals, vaguely Dutch-like. For let. You could live here! Probably not here. I calculated that my trip to the station via bike + buying tickets and waiting + non-stop to London meant that I...

BetterCities: Are our streets too wide?

I've seen 5 or 6 foot-wide lanes in the UK, FWIW. Pretty funny.

    BU Development Thread

Don't be cynical -- that is the case. BU Dining Services plays politics hard-core, pretty much tries to kill off everything around it not attached to it.

    BU Development Thread

I pushed really hard at several BRA meetings for ground floor retail here. They repeatedly insisted that it 'was not appropriate' in the building. Sigh. And if you scroll up in this thread I think you'll find some messages where I got in an argument with people about how BU is killing this zone...

What would you do to get the T out of its financial mess?

Funny way to frame the fact that you'd be getting those few rich people to foot the bill for nice transit options for everyone. And you'd also get something that no amount of money can buy right now, and that anyone in a hurry could use, no matter their income level: an uncongested city...

What would you do to get the T out of its financial mess?

I feel that Boston has less bus service density roaming the streets compared to places like Chicago or NY. Part of it is the BERy-designed hub-and-spoke structure of the network. But still -- despite the extensive subway infrastructure in NY and Chicago, there is still a thick network of buses...

    Is parking too cheap?

Speaking of Commons, here in Cambridge they take their old Commons laws very seriously. There's all kinds of cows, horses and sheep roaming around in them. You can even buy the meat (cow, at least) on the market... I guess tragedy of the commons never made it over the pond... Or probably it...

What would you do to get the T out of its financial mess?

The same Federal highway trust fund that is going bankrupt every few years and needs several dozen billion dollars pumped into it just to stay afloat? That one?

When was the last time that state or city police had time or interest to deal with theft of any part of a bicycle?

Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

BRT doesn't even make sense for the GLX. The whole point is that it feeds into the Central Subway. Otherwise you might as well not bother with the project.

    Biking in Boston

When I was there I would start by looking early to merge right and then change lanes to the right hopefully by the time I reached the intersection. Usually could do it no problem between Charlesgate and Kenmore.

Green Line Extension to Medford & Union Sq

Design-Build has its own set of pitfalls so it's no panacea. Always good to review this article by Manuel Maynar. It describes a bit how the Spanish built a Madrid metro extension about 15 years ago, underground, for 41 million Euro/km. Focuses a lot on tunneling, to be sure, but that's still...
