Copley Square Revamp | Back Bay

My gut reaction is that this project demonstrates how a kind of nihilistic and hopeless ugliness seems to have pervaded much of today's architecture. I blame the influence of the mundane and minimalist high tech look, as displayed in the bleak grey hardscape used in this project. Also, I think...

BPDA Austin Street Parking Lot Development | Charlestown

The city of Boston should have moved Rutherford Ave over to run alongside I-93 from City Square to Sullivan Square decades ago. It's too late now with all the development along the corridor.

Will they be pre-programmed to drive like Masshole drivers? 😊

South Station Tower | South Station Air Rights | Downtown

A few years ago there was a thread on here showcasing conceptual plans the city had for infilling and developing air rights over the entire Mass Pike/I-93 interchange area.

    52 New Street | Alewife | Cambridge

New Street's come a long way since it was first built as just a two-lane (no sidewalks) access road to the new Fresh Pond shopping center around 1963, alongside the western edge of the huge Cambridge city dump. Good to see this area finally being developed for housing, as it is ideally located...

Transit Planning $h!tposting (Ideas so bad, they're good)

If an economical deep bore machine ever happens, this would work.

Hurley Building Redevelopment | 19 Staniford St | West End

It can be preserved through documentation. Before treating it down, the city can do an extensive photo and video set. Hell, they can even do a complete 3D lydar type survey of it to preserve a perfect 3D model. But please, get rid of this 60s urban renewal monstrosity.

    "Dirty Old Boston"

What kind of miscreant would build a highway (i.e. Storrow Drive) through this?

Why is the subway so jerky?

Vancouver BC's SkyTrain is a fully automated driverless system, and it is a very comfortable ride. Most of it is elevated and on regular rails (not monorail). I've ridden it several times and absolutely love it.

    Grounding the McGrath

Those connections are exactly what are needed. No one expects a perfect street grid in a historically carved-up area like this, but a connected network of streets and paths that works with the man-made topography is feasible, and is what you're showing here.

    Grounding the McGrath

It's one of those netherworld areas like West Cambridge (west of Alewife Brook Pkwy and north of Concord Ave). For areas like these, 75 years ago a connected street grid should have been laid out on paper and some land use planning done along with that. But instead it's just been haphazard infill.

Transit Planning $h!tposting (Ideas so bad, they're good)

"West Chelsea" would be ideal as a common name for both the SL and commuter rail. It still has "Chelsea" in it for commuter rail logic, but also gives it a correct geographic name for the SL.

Transit Planning $h!tposting (Ideas so bad, they're good)

I would leave the commuter rail station name as Chelsea, but rename the Silver Line stop at that location as Chelsea Rail Stop or Chelsea Rail Station.

    Grounding the McGrath

To keep this project viable, how about keeping the segment that the overpass removal is on, and drop the northern segment (north of the bridge over the GLX Tufts branch)? That would at least still accomplish the heart of the project.

Photo of the Day, Boston Style: Part XIX (2025)

That's my old neighborhood, and I personally knew Mr. Danehy. I'm really grateful that the old hellhole city dump was filled and capped to create this gem of a park, and named after a fine man. Thank you for the great photos
