I-90 Interchange Improvement Project & West Station | Allston

Connectivity between the phases is not difficult, as discussed a few posts above. Also, the layout of each phase would be independent from the other. I do agree with you about the costs. Breaking the project in phases would probably raise the overall cost.

I-90 Interchange Improvement Project & West Station | Allston

That's why I'm thinking it would be good to build the project in phases. Phase 1 would be the "early action" project recently proposed by MassDOT in the area around the Cambridge Street bridge over the Pike, Phase 2 would be to build SFR, Mass Pike and the offshore shared path in the Throat...

    Green Line Reconfiguration

I'd like to see a double track viaduct out of the Joy St. portal to Charles. The only logistical problem is the fire station needing cross-street access at the location where the viaduct would be rising up from ground level.

    General Boston Discussion

You're probably right with regards to NIMBY opposition and lack of political will. But it is physically possible to leave the existing Charles River Park buildings largely in place while infilling around them with small streets and density of varying heights. A few years ago I came up with...

    "Dirty Old Boston"

Based on the 1-28-38 stack of three route markers and the Somerville Ave/Union Square directional sign on the left, this photo looks like it's on McGrath Hwy northbound on the north side of the junction with Washington St. Google streetview of that location matches the buildings:

The final as-built version looks too much like this guy:

North Station, Charles River Draw, & Tower A

Render from Stlin: It looks brutalist, very much like a remnant of the now demolished GC garage. I dub thee Son of GC Garage.

    Kendall/MIT Infill and Small Developments

I like it, but the brick veneer panels look a bit suspect. I notice vertical seams. Real brick masonry would have really worked better.

I-90 Interchange Improvement Project & West Station | Allston

It's doable. I pasted the preferred Pike-on-the-surface Throat option onto Google Maps and got this. It looks like they'd be no spatial and connection problems with building just the Throat section first and tying it in with the existing Allston Pike interchange.

I-90 Interchange Improvement Project & West Station | Allston

I do mean that. The Pike through the existing Allston interchange is already at-grade, so grounding the Pike through the Throat area would not introduce any new ramps or grades to connect the grounded Throat segment of the Pike to the existing interchange.

South Station Tower | South Station Air Rights | Downtown

What about the the proposed third tower at State Street HQ | One Congress | Bulfinch Crossing. Is that still happening?

I-90 Interchange Improvement Project & West Station | Allston

Another breaking up into phases could be to build the "Throat" section of the project next, taking out the Mass Pike viaduct and placing the Pike at-grade, shifting SFR over as planned, and constructing the multi-use path off the riverbank. That would require a lot less funds than building the...

Totally agree. My first response to seeing the front view of this tower sitting atop South Station is "ouch!". But it will grow on me over time

Roads and Highways General Development Thread

Here's a very factual video on the land and urbanity wasted on large expressway interchanges located in central areas of large cities. As it says in the video, a mission of new generations of Americans should be to dismantle these land gobbling monstrosities and replace them with housing...

    Crazy Transit Pitches

I like it, and have thought about it myself over the years. The original right-of-way is intact north of where the Fellsway West dips underneath I-93 at the south end of Spot Pond. So from there to Stoneham, it's basically intact. South of there, you could easily fit in an LRV line along...

    "Dirty Old Boston"

Love the density of the urban fabric, but damn that Central Artery. Really, they should have followed through with earlier plans and built a 4-track elevated railway link between North and South stations (instead of the expressway) along the same alignment, with just a surface road beneath it.

    "Dirty Old Boston"

Aaaah, a highway-free riverfront. So easy on the eyes. What a concept: a riverfront for people, not for cars. But wait...how can that be?

I-90 Interchange Improvement Project & West Station | Allston

Much of the rest of the Pike is being decked, so I don't see any physical feasibility reasons why this realigned segment through Beacon Park couldn't be as well. It's just a roadway on terra firma. Drive the piles, build the deck, and there you are! It would be wise to plan ahead the areas that...
