    General Boston Discussion

Interesting read, but it's about how Boston is hurtling away from Philly in the life sciences industries, not how Philly is hurtling towards Baltimore. Wrong URL?

Photo of the Day, Boston Style: Part XVI (2022)

I know I'm engaging in typical aB "nothing's-ever-good-enough" criticism, but I have to say I'm disappointed with the design of the Seaport Boulevard median. I don't like the way it visually blocks one side of the street from the other and replaces the view of a varying streetwall and dynamic...

    General Boston Discussion

One could, but not all flattering photo essays convey the same degree of the reality of a place, of what it's like to be there in person. Boston is consistently rated one of the top US cities for walking, but I've never heard anything like that said of Atlanta, so I was surprised when I came...

BU Data Sciences Center | 665 Commonwealth Avenue | BU Central

Not if BU takes a deconstructionist approach to whatever problems arise. I read an article a while back on the tendency of cutting edge buildings like BU's to start developing problems almost immediately. The author was responding to critics of a new building with an extravagant roof that...

Probably works the same way sausage is made. The less you know about it, the more you're going to like it.

Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial | Boston Common | Downtown

LOL. That's exactly what I thought when I saw it. It's like it comes from an alternate universe where Rodin's "The Thinker" becomes Rodin's "The Headache".

South Station Tower | South Station Air Rights | Downtown

Speaking of which, after seeing the plans and renderings for Commonwealth Pier I've started fantasizing about the city and owner doing something similar there. Right now you walk under a grand arch only to come out to a rather cramped and underwhelming space. It could definitely use a little...

    Downtown Crossing/Financial District | Discussion

Just a new tradition in architectural rendering. Trees are de rigueur as symbols of environmental awareness or fighting global warming or sustainability or whatever. The end product very likely won't have any, and even if it does, it won't be long before they're gone. Just like the wind turbines...

    Piers Park 3 Redevelopment

Seems like the Trustees can be very persuasive. Afer this project is done it would be awesome if they could persuade Financial District execs to cough up the cash to build the Garden Under Glass. Something better than this, though.

EXP | 795 Columbus Avenue | Northeastern University

I love the first building (ISEC?) in this complex, but I can't warm up to this one at all. It looks like a gigantic electrical or refrigeration mechanism not even meant for human occupation.

Thanks. That's encouraging to hear. I was afraid we might have been looking at another Filene's hole.

Amazon Office II/SeaPAC | 1 Boston Wharf Rd. (Seaport Sq Parcel L5) | Seaport

Anyone care to speculate what impact Amazon's announcement may have on the new office tower? https://www.nytimes.com/2022/11/14/technology/amazon-layoffs.html

    General Boston Discussion

You mean universities like Harvard (founded 1636), MIT (1861), BC (1863), BU (founded 1838, relocated to Boston 1867), NU (1898), or medical institutions like Mass General (1811), Mass E&E (1824), Children's (1869), and NE Baptist (1893)? I didn't know the "New Boston" began all the way back...

Raffles Boston (40 Trinity Place) | 426 Stuart Street | Back Bay

Positive about the project but kind of negative about Boston. There's a "why put a fancy hotel there?" or "this is like putting brocade curtains on a garage window" undertone, so the project gets praised while the city gets dissed.

Seaport Neighborhood - Infill and Discussion

More proof the Seaport is a great success. https://www.bizjournals.com/boston/news/2022/10/24/snowport-marketplace-2022-new-vendors.html??utm_source=sy&utm_medium=lsyp&utm_campaign=nbcboston&utm_content=nbcboston Does anyone think this will detract from the other shindig at City Hall?

Apparently it's not just Boston. https://sfstandard.com/research-data/san-francisco-sf-venture-capital-trends-startups/ It's like the VC dudes are having a mid-life crisis and want to restart their careers in a new place so they can feel young again. 🙄

Bill Russell Bridge | North Washington St.

The state should just shut down the MCCA, the MBTA, MassDOT, etc. and hand all their functions and responsibilities over to Massport. Out of all these agencies, it's the only one that seems to have some competence at getting things done right.
