State Street HQ | One Congress | Bulfinch Crossing | West End

Love this view of the swoop framed by the streetwalls. Looks awesome! I just hope there isn't some other part yet unbuilt that will block it. If it doesn't get blocked I can see this scene becoming a postcard view of Boston similar to Acorn St.

Photo of the Day, Boston Style: Part XVI (2022)

The Opera House needs a flashier sign. This one gets blasted to the phantom zone by the Paramount and the Modern.

Lyrik Back Bay | 1001 Boylston Street (Parcel 12) | Back Bay

Isn't Samuels kind of cheating, though? My understanding is that the deck is only for a plaza/park and doesn't have to support the weight of the buildings, which are on terra firma. The deck for the Viola has to support the whole building. And there's also a subway station to take into account.

    NYC Architecture and Development

For some reason I read this as a temple (not to capitalism) or similar religious building. I must have seen pics of some temple that resembles this but I don't remember what it was. Anyone have any idea what I might have been looking at?

Woof! The Sheraton, Hilton and 30 Dalton are a commieblock horror show from this angle.

BU Data Sciences Center | 665 Commonwealth Avenue | BU Central

I'm starting to read it less as a stack of books and more as a stack of wrapped Christmas gifts.

Hood Business Park | 480-570 Rutherford Avenue | Charlestown

Maybe someone came up with the concept of a "soil feature" as a counterpart to the so-called water feature?

Are there special exceptions/provisions/requirements in the fire code for a residential building this tall? I can't imagine that if there's a fire the residents in the higher floors are expected to descend a thousand-foot high stair.

    Downtown Crossing/Financial District | Discussion

I'll counter that assertion by pointing out that the built environment of a metro area is directly shaped by innumerable factors other than politics and crime, such as the price of construction materials, but this board finds it possible to not discuss whether the price of steel or concrete will...

Take Back The Streets (...and alleys)

I actually don't know whether it does or not. My comment was based on some articles I've read in the SF Chronicle about how difficult and expensive it is to open and run a small business in San Francisco. None of the articles were specifically about outdoor dining or jersey barriers. They were...

Take Back The Streets (...and alleys)

Looks like Wu is trying to turn Boston into San Francisco. https://www.boston.com/news/local-news/2022/04/07/outdoor-dining-jamaica-plain-boston/

Stanhope Hotel | 39 Stanhope Street | Back Bay

That's probably not likely to happen, but the next best thing would be if they closed Stanhope St. to traffic and turned it into something like Congress Square/Quaker Lane was supposed to be. Whatever happened to that anyway? Anyone know if it's dead, or just waiting for a stable post-COVID...

Boston Landing | New Balance Complex | Brighton

Good point. Boston is supposed to be the Athens of America, not the Rome of America. ;)

Lyrik Back Bay | 1001 Boylston Street (Parcel 12) | Back Bay

Looking at the last few sets of photos it consciously dawned on me for the first time that this project will have a tremendous visual impact from many different viewpoints.

    Aerials

Whenever I see "toy model" aerials like these I always imagine Godzilla entering stage left and stomping the whole thing flat.

Cottonwood Mixed-Use Development | Dorchester Avenue at Old Colony Avenue | South Boston

I'm of two minds about this. On the one hand ! The city is creating new urban space to experience. On the other hand 😔! The city is losing the cozy, compact feel that's one of things I love about it. As usual, there always has to be a trade-off. Still, I'll go with the new urban space.

Oh God please, let's not have another open hole in the head like Millenium.

Winthrop Center | 115 Winthrop Square | Financial District

As great as I think Millenium Tower is, this looks like it's going to be even better. Thank God we didn't get those nightmarish early proposals.
