    Portland's Franklin Street redesign

Portland's myriad opportunities to see the bigger picture are quickly dwindling. They need to wake up and take all facets of urban design and planning seriously before it is no longer possible without having to throw stupid sums of cash at it.

    Portland's Franklin Street redesign

Unfortunately the Forest Ave corridor does not have the land resources to make it truly amenable to a full redesign as does Franklin. Franklin could truly be redesigned to make it worth the while to reclaim much of the land and turn it into an urban oasis. Besides I don't think Forest could...

    USM | Portland

That statement in itself is a terribly sad commentary on the state of architecture in the city.

The Armature | 52 Hanover St | Portland

Ummmmm .... so ...... did anyone bother to look up the definition of armature before naming the place? LOL Doesn't seem to fit any known definition. It's certainly not a piece of art. They probably paid big bucks to the folks who name pharmaceuticals to come up with something.

Roux Institute Campus Development | Portland

This thing is as much a monstrosity as the USM Law Building.

    Portland Bayside

Well how elitist can we get? We're going to dump ALL 201 affordable rate apartments into ONE building and be done with it. We would HATE to have to mingle with THOSE people.

    General Portland Discussion

No one goes to Beans for the food. I do not see the need for any dining establishment ON their campus however all of the noted options should be available within a short distance of the campus. They need to stick to what they are good at not try to become everything to everyone and thus...

A REAL Jewish Deli would clean up in that location.

    General Portland Discussion

And some landscape architecture as well ... I was interested to see Sasaki's LA Division is the design team behind the Ellinikon Metropolitan Park in Athens, Greece.

Portland Museum of Art Expansion | Portland

Honestly the original design is seriously lacking in any real originality. Just because it came out of a well known firm does NOT necessarily make it quality design.

Portland Museum of Art Expansion | Portland

Actually the new cut through of the facade brings better balance to the original structure and is a better transition from the side of the museum to the front.

    Portland Bayside

You're absolutely correct. In so many ways that ship has sailed and can only be corrected with tremendous new investments. Portland has some of the worst urban green spaces I have ever seen. And that's my gig.

Portland, ME - New Construction Continued

And yet the Rockies/Western style has been so overused in the west it has become nauseating.

Maine Public Broadcasting Bldg. | 25 Commercial St. | Portland

Both programs that have been questionably enforced and there seems to be little concern for non-historic areas and new developments. The fact is that trees mitigate heat gain in the environments they inhabit thus reducing electricity demands for air conditioning.

Maine Public Broadcasting Bldg. | 25 Commercial St. | Portland

Westbrook's program is pretty good in most respects, however there have been some glaring examples of mismanagement as well where very healthy trees have been removed unnecessarily when work is being done on a property. One example was the removal of beautiful little leaf lindens that were cut...

Maine Public Broadcasting Bldg. | 25 Commercial St. | Portland

Since we are discussing the topic of green space on this thread, I offer this article in support of Urban Forestry, a concept the city of Portland, Maine cannot grasp. This comes from the "other" Portland...

Portland Museum of Art Expansion | Portland

My thoughts exactly. MVRDV's presentation looks as though they were still hashing out ideas when they realized they were running out of time and had to get something together to present. It is very poorly put together and doesn't really convey a congealed concept. Gut reaction to the exterior...
