General MBTA Topics (Multi Modal, Budget, MassDOT)

Re: NSRL It seems like the only rail projects included in the Focus 2040 report are the ones they'd like to do regardless of what happens with the ongoing Rail Vision study.

So the single-platform approach is still the "MBTA preferred approach" to reconstructing all three Newton stations? Why bother spending the money if there's only going to be a single platform serving one track...

    MBTA Buses & Infrastructure

What would be the easiest way to just switch the lanes for the afternoon/evening? Convert the inbound bus lane into the normal inbound lane, the inbound lane into the outbound lane and the outbound lane into the outbound bus lane.

Does DCR have any plans to repave and widen the Paul Dudley White path in Cambridge between the BU Bridge and the River St Bridge?

Regional Rail (RUR) & North-South Rail Link (NSRL)

Re: North-South Rail Link All of Metro Boston needs a NSRL FAQ, really. And for that matter, the NSRL project really needs a new name that better communicates what it would do and why it is important.

Biking the Boston 'Burbs (Trails, MDC, & Towns beyond Hubway area)

In early December, the Belmont Board of Selectmen approved a design for the Belmont Community Path. It'll cost $27.9m. http://belmontonian.com/news/a-quarter-century-in-the-making-selectmen-ok-recommended-community-path/ The design starts south of the Fitchburg line just west of Waverley and...

    Biking in Boston

Somerville has painted contraflow lanes on Hancock St and painted neckdowns at its intersections with Elm, Summer, and Highland. Hancock is one way in multiple directions. It's been one-way SB from Summer to Elm and one-way NB from Summer to Charnwood. Both one-way segments have seen heavy...

Biking the Boston 'Burbs (Trails, MDC, & Towns beyond Hubway area)

Input wanted on new Weston rail trail The article has no mention of NIMBY opposition, but given that it's Weston there must be some grumbling about this, no? Given the progress of Waltham's Wayside trail and possibly the Belmont Community Path, this could be a really long and nifty corridor.

What, you guys don't think if Waltham builds the train to the city limits, Weston will spring into action on their segment of Mass Central? (just kidding)

I agree with you. All the management skill, transit expertise, and political skills in the world aren't as useful as they could be if there isn't a clear goal to which they can be applied. I think the MBTA could really use a clear and far-ranging long-term vision. It won't be easy to achieve...

Regional Rail (RUR) & North-South Rail Link (NSRL)

Re: North-South Rail Link I think it's telling that even in this sort of NSRL study, they don't address the fact that the NSRL is necessary to RUN MORE TRAINS. The executive summary mentions the complexity and lack of efficiency of stub-end stations, but doesn't follow through on what that...

There's now a bike traffic light and green paint where the Cambridge Linear Park crosses Mass Ave in North Cambridge. You can now go from one end of the path to the other crossing Mass Ave directly without having to cross Mass Ave and then Cedar St. I believe they have added an extra phase to...

Connected/Automated vehicles and infrastructure in Boston

Once you start building up passenger numbers, you're going to have a group of people with different origins and destinations. You could try an UberPool type system, but we know that UberPool involves a lot of deadhead miles today. Or you start using large vehicles and a fixed route....so, we'd...

Connected/Automated vehicles and infrastructure in Boston

I don't see autonomous vehicles having a huge impact on the mode share of urban areas. AVs will suffer from the same geometric inefficiencies that regular cars do. AVs may be even less efficient because they will inevitably travel a considerable number of deadhead/"zero occupancy" miles. How...

MassDOT Rail: Springfield Hub (East-West, NNERI, Berkshires, CT-Valley-VT-Quebec)

Re: Amtrak / Regional Rail Discussion Thread Senate approves study of Boston to Springfield high-speed rail Is this duplicative of the work done in the NNEIRI study or a deeper dive into the Boston-Springfield segment?
