    B Line Improvements

Don't worry, I'm not actually proposing such a thing- just being a bit doomsday. I do think that paving the reservation for bus lanes is a bad idea, but I doubt in the modern situation it would lead to the Brighton Avenueization of Comm Ave. (Especially since, as you say, the road is having its...

    B Line Improvements

Later on, we could also allow HOV traffic and "green cars" to use the extra lane. Of course, such mixed traffic could cause problems- therefore as an experiment the "B" branch can be replaced with an articulated bus, thus reducing the number of different vehicle types in the lane. If this...

    Silver Line to Chelsea

Re: Silver Line to Chelsea (Study Meeting) Nice job blurring out the destination on the bus.

    B Line Improvements

While I like the idea of a subway on the route, the only way it really makes sense is if you're preparing for some kind of Urban Ring (like vanshnookenraggen's line to Harvard- I hope the tunnel under Comm Ave is 4 tracks so the Green Line to BC can have two and the line to Harvard can be...

    Crazy Transit Pitches

Right now Newtonville is Zone 1 ($5.50 one-way), so it will most likely be either that or 1A (subway fare). Of course, there'll probably be a fare increase before the station opens. The fare zones for the commuter rail kind of confuse me- Braintree is Zone 2 ($6.00 one-way), but also has the...

    Crazy Transit Pitches

I get the impression city-dwellers prefer to rely on "unscheduled" transit modes- that is, I can go to the station at any time and know that the wait to the next train won't be too bad. But when I lived in the suburbs, if I wanted to take the commuter rail, I have to go look up the schedule or I...

    B Line Improvements

For the most part it looks like a decent plan, but I have a few thoughts... (1) I'm not sure I understand the need of the 58 bus- like, you're already eliminating stops on the B corridor, and then you have an express beyond that? The Prudential/Back Bay section makes me wonder whether that...

    Crazy Transit Pitches

You can run Blue Line trains on every line, I think- the problem is you can't go the opposite direction, so you lose the advantage of wider and longer trains where you can run them. (And there's no need for pantographs on the other lines) I think the Orange and Blue dimensions are pretty much...

    Crazy Transit Pitches

Even if you run Red Line-class vehicles through the North-South Rail Link, I don't know if that's really still the "Red Line"... Personally, I'd classify colors based off of their downtown tunnels (kind of like NYC), it just so happens that in Boston those also correspond to incompatible vehicle...

    Reasonable Transit Pitches

In my ancedotal experience with the 39 bus Copley always seemed like a fairly busy stop- sure the Orange Line also goes downtown but it doesn't go everywhere the Green Line does, and Copley Square itself is a notable destination with the BPL and all.

    Crazy Transit Pitches

I guess you could do this, but I think it's probably more valuable to redevelop the Circle site for commercial and residential uses- really the walk between Reservoir and Cleveland Circle just needs to be made a little more friendly. (Also the traffic lights at Beacon and Chestnut Hill Ave...

    Reasonable Transit Pitches

An interesting article! It looks like we mostly agree here that the stops need to be reduced in this section... I think this is a big reason why the branch seems so plodding. Ridership figures are interesting- I didn't realize Babcock got more riders than Packard's Corner, for instance. I like...

    Reasonable Transit Pitches

Just trying to think of things that could be done with the B-line in a reasonable fashion... (how do people make those fancy Google Maps?) 1) Close Blandford St. station. Ideally, I'd rather consolidate BU East and Central, but they've been reconstructed and Blandford hasn't, so... it seems...

    Springfield Developments

Federal laws aren't forces of nature, they're forces of politics. It makes it a bigger factor to consider than if it wasn't a through-interstate we were talking about, sure, but if the political will is there then it can be overcome. And of course, you're going to need plenty of political will...

Federal Funds for South Station Expansion

Re: Fend Funds for South Station Expansion I have to admit, if the whole platform area is going to end up looking as dark and smoky as the bus terminal area, that will be fairly depressing. But if they can light it better and maybe find some sort of surface the grime won't stick to as easily...

    Logan Airport

It seems like the best place for a new airport would have been South Weymouth, you could even pretty easily extend the Red Line there- I suppose with the SouthField development that's an impossibility now, though. (and Hingham would have thrown a fit anyway)

    Silver Line to Chelsea

Re: Silver Line to Chelsea (Study Meeting) The leadership in this state still seems far more likely to approve a bus project than any rail extension (I imagine there are still people in Park Plaza trying to figure out a way to avoid building GLX), so I don't blame Chelsea for going for what...

    Street-running rail!

That's pretty clever... I have to admit, some sort of signal priority would definitely be the first major improvement I would want to make to the Green Line (stop consolidation on the B east of Packard's would be the second). I'm not sure about the unsignalized U-turn, though- it seems like you...

    Street-running rail!

This sounds logical, but I do worry that in the period where it has just been implemented you would have a lot more accidents from people used to the old system.

    Street-running rail!

On the infrastructure subject, would it be feasible to have central platforms? This could take up less space, but at the cost of either having to implement a new payment method, or require people to walk up to the front (which a lot of people aren't going to do). Either way you'd need fare...
