    Street-running rail!

I realize, especially in the post-downturn climate, resources are thin- but even in better days, it seems like the T is afraid of double-parkers and angry business owners, but was willing to spend $500 million to plow through local opposition on the Greenbush corridor. I've only been on...

    Street-running rail!

It seems like this is a no-brainer- we have overcrowded bus lines, a two-car trolley can hold more people than a bus, and we happen to have a full set of trolley infrastructure under the ground that conveniently intersects with our heavy-rail lines. And street-running light rail is used...

    Penn Station: Then and Now

I doubt we'll ever build anything quite like it, really... that kind of soaring Beaux-Arts structure just isn't what gets built anymore. Even when/if Madison Square Garden goes somewhere else again, no one's going to give up the valuable air rights just to make the station nicer... That's why...

What would you do to get the T out of its financial mess?

MBCR is a private company that operates the commuter rail on contract to the MBTA, who remains in charge of everything. (And MBCR plays no role in things like planning expansions and the like) Not exactly what Semass was talking about, I think... I do wonder if as we start thinking about...

Re: Driven By Customer 'Service' Parte Dos The cars won't be interoperable- the moving parts underneath should be interchangeable, but nothings going to get around the fact that a Red Line car is wider and longer than an Orange Line. (Unless they narrow the platforms, but that would be a bad idea)

    Crazy Transit Pitches

I'm curious- it's generally said that forking the Orange Line is a bad idea due to the ridership north of where it would branch- but wasn't the MBTA itself essentially planning to branch it with the express setup?

    Crazy Transit Pitches

Build a subway tunnel that connects from the Kenmore Loop approaches and run it over to Storrow Drive, which gets boulevardized (since that seems to be the popular thing to do here- make the Pike free to compensate) with a trolley reservation, with stops at Mass Ave, Clarendon St./Esplanade, Mt...

    Crazy Transit Pitches

As far as I know every single train on the MBTA system is and has always been standard gauge- there are LRT systems that aren't, but not in Boston. My understanding is at one point Mattapan Line vehicles were brought to the former Red Line yard at Cabot via a track connection to the Red Line at...

    Crazy Transit Pitches

In my scenario, the C line would become a trolley shuttle not entirely unlike the Mattapan Line (but without the PCCs- they could even share a common fleet, since this will likely be after the PCCs finally give up the ghost). Part of the yard at Reservoir could be retained for a reduced trolley...

Re: Driven By Customer 'Service' Parte Dos I've definitely seen people switching by hand at Cleveland Circle. I'm not sure if all the switches there are hand-throw, though, or if some of them are automated. (there seem to be a few different options on how to loop trains there)

    Crazy Transit Pitches

If the Green Line is converted to heavy rail (something I do not think is necessary), the original 1934 plan should be put in place with regards to C line by having it use the Kenmore loop to turn. Not sure how you could integrate that with the D line, though. Maybe it would be rerouted via a...

Regional Rail (RUR) & North-South Rail Link (NSRL)

Re: North-South Rail Link POR-WOR-NYP is reasonable for a Portland-New York City train in the absence of a North-South Rail Link. But if you have one, I think running any other route than POR-BON/BOS-NYP is silly... it combines the demand for the Downeaster with the demand for service south of...

Re: Driven By Customer 'Service' Parte Dos But everyone else hasn't (see SEPTA for the obvious mistake), only certain systems that implemented things correctly. And even F-Line's posts seem to say that the MBTA has a history of botching these kinds of things (red line). I don't think...

    Congestion toll in Boston?

I would say that one of the first things that congestion money should be used for, if such a plan is implemented, would be to reduce the fares on the commuter rail, which are currently quite high. In general though one might end up with a cart before the horse problem, where you want to use...

Re: Driven By Customer 'Service' Parte Dos Has the NTSB ever made such a recommendation? I seem to recall that the Washington Metro had a history of failing to fully implement NTSB recommendations, resulting in further (fatal) accidents- but never received such dramatic sanction.
