Could be a lot better. Clean up the beach, widen the sidewalks, repave the roads and the seawall. Build housing (or some other form of a streetwall) to separate the beach from the container yard.
Clean up the area around it, add housing, some food, and get rid of the shipping yard would make the biggest difference.
Perhaps cleaning up the water (dredge the bay, cover the bottom with gravel and then gradually finer-grained sand).

Either way, I <3 the new Blue Line cars. Hopefully they replace the entire fleet with them. Although, those Red Line trains are very spacious.
Personally, though, I'm all about the larger hub airports taking the lion's share of the business. That's the beauty of (high speed) rail - it can more efficiently serve the regional routes that airlines are currently burdened with.

I've got to ask - prior to seeing the High Line, did anyone actually think keeping the highway up was a good idea? I sure as hell didn't, even though I can see the potential now.
Considering most of what I know of architecture and urbanism has come from this board and personal experience (and Jane Jacobs' book,) when I get to school, I'll hopefully have my own preconceived notions of design before the teachers can get to me.
