Maine Public Broadcasting Bldg. | 25 Commercial St. | Portland

Do you know what members that might be? I would like to respond to their assertion that vegetation is incongruous with the historic district. As a landscape designer and urban forester for forty years I have often encountered this type of blatant ignorance on the part of municipal officials...

The Casco | 201 Federal Street | Portland

I had hoped they would be a bit more progressive in their choices of finish materials. The brick color and pattern is reminiscent of a building that has been in place for 60 years and just blends into the background. I'm not sure the silver panels are going to save it.

Maine Public Broadcasting Bldg. | 25 Commercial St. | Portland

The facade of the building resembles a scaled down version of the new Maine Med building in a way.

It seems clear that unless the architects were asked to move the main entrance to High street that there was some condition that warranted doing that since all of the proposals are doing it. As with anything the move is surprising but we will get used to it and probably come to like it even better.

    USM | Portland

You're now comparing apples to oranges. I am wholly familiar with Elkus-Manfredi's work. The New Balance headquarters is an example of their work way above and beyond the USM project.

Herald Square | 385 Congress St | Portland

Different is great as long as it is rooted in solid design principles and is appropriate to it's environment. Unfortunately too many architects either have a total lack of imagination or they don't know when enough is enough. A single errant design element can ruin what could otherwise be a...

83 Middle St | CHOM Affordable Housing | Portland

"Shipping Container Chic" seems to be the design que du jour for a good majority of recent developments throughout the country.

    USM | Portland

Yes, because the overused gray metal siding is so forward thinking .... MEH. National design firms are responsible for some of the more horrific architectural trends out there.

I for one am giving them the benefit of the doubt until we can see the actual musings of the architects on the 18th. Until then I will withhold judgement and opinions.

    General Portland Discussion

That $30 million investment in the CCCC was expensive lipstick on that pig. It would be nice if folks would wake up to the possibility of creating an all new facility which would include a new arena and major conference/convention center/entertainment/hotel complex. Ideally it should be...

Portland Foreside | 58 Fore Street | Portland

Just plain cold. As a landscape designer I would have incorporated much more plant material into the hardscape design. Portland has a critical problem with their mindset concerning urban planning and design. There is absolutely no thought put into integrating green space into the built...

Infill and Small Developments | Portland

The place is okay, a bit cold in it's design but it would be like living in a fish bowl with that apartment building directly behind you. This place offers zero privacy.

Wow. White would not have been my first choice.

It's a ridiculous argument. They are not mutually exclusive.

    Shipyard Brewery | Cambria Suites | 86 Newbury Street | Covetrus | 12 Mountfort Street | Portland

I would argue however, that the built environment that is predominantly experienced by the public is the EXTERIOR or outdoor environment as the majority of Portlanders will never have reason to see the interior of these buildings yet will experience the exterior nearly every day. That is why...

Another example of their work would be more appropriate than what is proposed.
