    DESIGN A BETTER PORTLAND

Portland will be, “reconfiguring the intersection of Congress, High and Free streets... Changes intended to enhance pedestrian safety will include eliminating one entrance to Free Street and expanding the pedestrian plaza in front of the Portland Museum of Art.”...

    Biddeford/Saco Developments

More great development of Biddeford’s core. I like to bike from S. Portland and Scarborough down to Saco on the Eastern Trail then hop on Route 1 into Biddeford. I’m hoping some infrastructure improvements follow this project because the area around the railroad bridge over Route 1 near this...

Other People's Rail: Amtrak, commuter rail, rapid transit news & views outside New England

Quick video that explores the relationship between density and ridership as well as the importance of robust bus service. In essence, the narrator asserts density surrounding a station is important but connecting that station to well used bus lines is what really spurs ridership.

The Casco | 201 Federal Street | Portland

😂 That site is a huge opportunity. Put me down for $20 as well

Portland, ME - New Construction Continued

Yep, those will be some great views. I could have been more clear. This project would be better if it were rotated 90 degrees so that it is taller than it is long. Obviously, this is not possible with the current limitations placed on height. Anyway, great to see new housing.

Portland, ME - New Construction Continued

Another Portland project that would look better if it were rotated 90 degrees.

Regional New England Rail (Amtrak & State DOT & NEC)

Separate but somewhat related, there was an article in the Midcoast newspaper today about increasing the number of roundtrips on the Downeaster.

    Crazy Transit Pitches (Maine Edition)

It’ll be a disappointment if the station moves to the old Union Station location and the new station is dwarfed by the nearby parking garage. Because we’re in crazy transit pitches- Portland has approximately 1/11 the population of Boston so the new station should be approximately 1/11 of the...

    Crazy Transit Pitches (Maine Edition)

This is really encouraging news and such a pleasant surprise. The only thing that could make a move to the old Union Station location better would be an announcement that the new station will be a multi-story, mixed used structure featuring retail, offices and apartments in it. The draft report...

    Brunswick Development

Not disagreeing with your assertion about architecture and sustainable living and the design- both the architecture and placement on the lot- is lacking but from a sustainability perspective, these units do allow for mostly car free living. It’s an easy walk to Shaw’s and a new Hannaford is...

    Brunswick Development

It’s funny you mention dormitories and a Scandinavian aesthetic. I rather like the new dorms at Bowdoin and think they have a sort of Nordic vibe.

    Brunswick Development

Construction is moving exceptionally fast on this project. As @Cosakita18 noted, the design of the buildings is rather standard but I do appreciate that they’re varying the color of the siding. I’m a sucker for black and charcoal exteriors! I remain disappointed by the suburban layout of...

Thanks for posting that, really enjoyed the game! The multiplayer option is a lot of fun.

    Hobson's Landing | Aloft Hotel | 383 Commercial Street | Portland

Article in the paper today about Reger Dasco Properties moving forward with phase 3 of this development. No new renderings but presumably it will look like the building in post #41 of this thread from @Portlander. It's a good looking building and will be a nice addition to Commercial. I do wish...

Portland Foreside | 58 Fore Street | Portland

A search for Sun Life jobs in Maine largely yields back of house jobs, mostly in Finance and Operations/Claims. Likely good paying, middle-middle class jobs that provide a decent amount of disposable income. Incidentally, I see more IT than sales positions. No, the addition of Sun Life isn't...

    Crazy Transit Pitches (Maine Edition)

Noooooo! Don’t require me to make a connection when I’m leaving Brunswick and traveling south of Portland. We really need at least 8 round trips on the Downeaster, which is hardly crazy. Just halfway decent service. I love the idea of a Brunswick - Bangor route. It’s the beginning of Brunswick...

    Biddeford/Saco Developments

420 Alfred St. Biddeford The renderings accompanying the article are basic but the proposal is a nice infill project that would transform a strip-style shopping center into a combination of commercial spaces and 150 apartment and condominium units. On an adjacent undeveloped parcel,128 "garden...

    45 Brown St. | Portland

Others with more knowledge of Portland’s land use code likely can provide greater insight but I believe no off street parking is required by the city for this project. In addition to being zoned B3, I believe a project on this lot would be eligible for the “transit proximate development and...

    Crazy Transit Pitches (Maine Edition)

I understand the Mountain Junction north wye to have have fallen out of favor with NNEPRA. Maybe that will change if MDOT isn't supportive of relocating from the PTC to the old Union Station location, which I expect will, unfortunately, be the conclusion they reach. I'm lukewarm on the the...

    Portland Passenger Rail

Wasn't sure where to place this so I'm reviving this dormant thread. Also, having skimmed the discussion here, it's disheartening that we're still only talking about moving the PTC when the old Union Station location is clearly superior. Anyway... Many people have resolutions for the new year...
