Wouldn't critics say that congestion tolling will increase congestion and just takes away taxpayer money?

MBTA Winter 2015: Failure and Recovery

A good politican knows how to break promises at times, but also deliver on key issues. A major tax that actually encourages public transit usage is the gas tax and tolling. Of course, no politican is going to vote in favor of a gas tax because it is political sucicde.

I didn't mean that it is fully a tax. It can be treated as one for some people like how tariffs reduce trade. Of course, not every barrier is a tax, but since tolls are collected to the government and then it is distributed via maintaining or financing infrastructure projects. Then, yes....It is...

If there is a barrier for you to get the food, then the barrier acts as a tax.

Yes. Highway Tolls. I wouldn't say it is a "tax" per say, but it kinda acts like a tax on movement of goods. People can take the other roads, but there are also tolls on the exits of Pike as well.

You got a point. Though, people already in Boston can easily walk, buy a car, bike, taxi, uber, etc to many of the areas because it is already so density populated. The subway fare isn't a "toll" per say. Trade/Services/Goods exchanges can still happen. For people outside of Boston in the...

MBTA Winter 2015: Failure and Recovery

Re: Dr. Beverly Scott resigns I have heard people say that the Green Line Expansion is a waste of money and the real focus should be maintaining the current system. Should we just delay the expansion and divert some costs to maintenance? Just wondering.

Yep. I agree. Tolls do alter traffic patterns. No Toll should charge $1000 per ride.

If tolls are on all highways going out of the city and in the city, wouldn't it be a protectionist policy? Also, Wouldn't it just divert traffic to side roads and avenues, but allow more congestion to main streets? Also, Wouldn't people just not want to go into Boston anymore?

Tolls are in place, so commuters have an incentive to take the MBTA. If the tolls were removed, the incentive is to not take the train because cars tend to be faster than trains at times.

MBTA Winter 2015: Failure and Recovery

Re: Dr. Beverly Scott resigns Agreed. Though, this problem is the result of balanced budget amendments. Nobody votes for more revenues politically because it looks bad, even though businesses do occasionally try to raise revenues.
